Just came in from some myself. Started out casting some 3/4 oz. egg sinkers for my boss...figured while I was there I might as well crank out some of my 535gr. Postell's. Cast 100 of them out of lead pipe before the ole belly got to growling for some chow.

I did some 320gr gc .45's for my .45-70, a few .429 230gr hpgc for my .44-40 and about 50 .243 , 90 gr gc rn for my old 788.
Wednesday, I shot some .243 , 3 shot groups at 50 yds with the cast at 1500 to 2300 fps and got some 8 shaped groups, the biggest were under 3/4", except for a 2550 fps load , all 3 shots missed the paper!
Shall try again with higher velocities using water dropped and heat treated bullets, even though there was no leading, I suspect the 2550 over stressed the alloy and caused the rifling's grip to slip.

I am going to try to send some pictures, BUT, I am firmly rooted in the 1960's and have very little PC skills, don't hold your breath.

I'm in the same boat pretty much. Only way I can do it is lay one on the scanner and scan it. It was all trial and error. You should've seen me about 12 years ago taking a machine shop class...I didn't even know how to turn one of these computers on. The young guys were going at it like ducks in water.

Try using plain wheelweights. I push 150 gr RNFP GC (Lee mold) at 1990 FPS with great groups in a Savage 340 30-30.

Was scrounging thru Dad's old shop yesterday and came up with some plumbers lead, wheel weights and a couple of bars. The bars were about an inch or so wide and as thick...about a foot long or so. Can't recall the wording on the one, but part of it was 50/50. Meant to look at it closer when I got home, but forgot all about it. Will check it out when I get home today.

Quig;
The bars sound like auto body 50-50 lead/ tin solder.
I am using ww's with 2% tin added for everything except muzzle loaders, came up with lead that tests at BHN6 at a recycling plant for 10c a lb., useing that for the ml'ers.
The load that was off paper was 26gr 4198, 90gr rngc, 2550fps, 24 gr 4198 at 2300fps had 2 touching and 1 , 1/2" to right.
14gr 4227 at 1550fps put 3 in a hole 1/4x3/8", 16gr 4227 at 1700fps put 2 almost touching and 1, 1/2" high.
The potential of the bullet and rifle need to be explored more for inexpensive target and varmint shooting, about 6-7c per shot.

I've got about 15, 5 pound ingots of this stuff. I wondered if anyone knew the composition of "Babbit Metal"? I know there is quite a bit of Lead in it, and most likely some Tin. But other than that I'd just be guessing. I was wondering the suitability of this for bullet casting material? Or if anyone knew of a link that listed the given contents of these type of metals? billt

Billt;
There used to be a lot of babbit metal around, but when Chevy went to inserts in the rods in '53, the principal use slowly faded out.
Automotive babbit usually had copper and even some silver, depends on grade and if for regular or racing use.
If you can read the manufacturer's name and the grade or lot or type , a web search might help.
Try classic car restorers sites, about the only bunch still pouring rods and using babbit.
Quig;
I managed to get some poor pictures with my $20 camera and get them on my web site, go to, I cannot make it do it, the address is dprinks @ www msnusers .com.
Let's see if this will work, type from dp to .com all in one with no spaces and see if it takes you there, or go to msnusers.com and try from there. I told you I don't know this stuff!
Still can't manage to hold it still when taking a picture.

Here's a pic of that lead bar Drinks. I can scratch it with my thumb nail...so I don't know. Billt I have a friend that tried casting 38-55 bullets out of babbit, said he didn't have much luck. Told me to make sinkers out of the bars if I wanted. I'll check those pics out Drinks.
