Hi Don,
I've searched for my moulds but have been unable to find them.  They are all in a box somewhere.  I put everything in storage pending a move in the near future.  It's kind of like working a rubic's cube shuffling the boxes around but  I'll find them.  Eventually.

Steve;

That rifle is Bitchin! Sell it to me! Seriously! Or I'll trade ya outta it, what do you like?

If you keep it, bear in mind that if the bore is over size that much your chamber may not be..........meaning that before you invest in a mould (or modify one by lapping), do a chamber cast with cerrosafe and mike the neck to be sure that a bullet of that size (plus the case thickness) will chamber. You will also be able to see the throat and mike that also!

Whatever you do, Good Luck on ya!

Since I've started shooting BPCR nearly 20 years ago, I've come across quite a few vintage rifles with barrels that are over bore. Matter of fact, I have a newer Shiloh Sharps 45-110 that the bore is UNDERSIZE. Groove diameter is .454. Like I said in a previous posting on this sight, you can also get a custom mould made, either for paper patch or grease groove. Steve Brooks, Dave Farmer at Colorado Shooters Supply, or Paul Jones Moulds are good choices. Now that you've slugged the barrel for proper diameter, next thing is to check the twist rate.  I would guess it is around 1-18". After that, consult the Greenhill Formula. Do a chamber cast of the throat area, and send that along with a request for a mould from one of these aforementioned chaps. They'll build you a mould that will produce the proper bullet. Nice thing about a properly cast bullet from a custom mould, it is perfect for your rifle as cast. No need to lubri-size the bullet. Matter of fact, why screw up a perfectly good projectile by sizing it? I and many others merely pan lube our bullets, then load 'em up. But, the downside is the custom moulds are expensive.. Around $150.00. But if you shoot those rifles in Comp alot it is worth it. One other thing about paper patch and Black Powder. You still need to put a thin paper wad over the powder and then apply a lube cookie between the bullet and the paper wad. Black Powder does need proper lube to keep the fouling somewhat soft between shots. Good Luck and good shooting!

That's too cool. My dad had a 82 Mauser bolt 12 Guage shotgun. I think one of my brothers got that one..

I have  a  NEI 535g 2 cavity mold.
Soft lead cast right at .460.
I resize to.458.
I guess you could  just not size them....

Or  just  custom order the  die to .462.

There were some special molds back in Friendship Indiana.
Paul Jones  I think......

beartoothbullets.com, they'll size you whatever you need, and it's some of the best cast bullets you'll find anywhere.

First rule on .45-70 blackpowder loads is start at 20/1 alloy.  If that doesnt group g0 to 40/1.  Always start soft and go softer.

Also, .45-70's benefit from compressed powder.  70 grains will almost fill the case, you need a compression die to push that powder down almost 1/2".   Put an 0.030 Over Powder card in then seat the bullet.

Trapdoor Springfield rifles can vary from .458 to .462 barrels.  All bullets go in .458.  They come out whatever the bore is, because they obiturate to fill the bore.  That is why you use soft lead.

DO NOT PUT AN OP CARD UNDER A HOLLOW BASED BULLET.  The Hollow must be open to receive the powder gas to flare the skirt.

Try Ranch Dog Bullets: http://www.ranchdogmolds.com/

TLC460-350-RF

TLC460-425-RF

His 45-70 bullet mold is a .460 as cast. These are semi custom molds, made for Ranch Dog by Lee. Plus RD carries the Lee sizers needed for these bullets. I use one in my Marlin 1895 and they work well.
