I bought one of those Lyman 57 sights for my T/C Hawken. Put on, direct bolt on. While I was putting it on I was wondering why I have never been able to remove the breach plug?

Is it actually removeable or not?

If I remember correctly (and I've been known to remember incorrectly on occasion) the breech plug on the T/C's is a hooked breech.  You would need a wrench to fit the slot in the plug to remove it.

I wouldn't remove the plug unless there was a real need to.  It isn't neccesary for routine cleaning.  The one time I had to remove a breech plug was to remove a stuck ball that defied all other attempts at removal.

I have a friend that has one like mine and he has never had his out either. He came up with the idea that it might be left hand threads. You think this might be a possibility?

I've never removed a T/C breech plug.  The one I removed was on an Italian flintlock pistol.  It had standard right hand thread.  Why do you want to remove the plug?

I was hoping the plug would come out without much trouble. I have always cleaned it in the usuall manner but the other day I took  it out and oiled it. Having been quite a while since I shot it, I ran some oily patches down  the bore and of course I lost one. I had to make a patch worm out of an old brush and I was thinking how much better it would be to be able to just take out the plug.
