Hey guys,
I started casting for pistol and muzzle loader recently, and it's been a blast. (No pun intended.) I am now moving into casting for the rifles, and was wondering if anyone might suggest a good powder for cast loads in rifles. I am planning to load for 30-30, k-31, 30-06, and 54R, and I'm just looking for target/plinking type loads. I have a Lee 170gr mold, and I'm hoping I can use it to make a serviceable round in each. Any suggestions?

Lots of powders wil work well with cast bullets in the rifle cartridges you named. You can try some handgun powders you might allready have on hand, and see how your rifles like them. Unique and 2400 will work well. I like SR4759 in the .30/06 and 7.62x54. It should work fine in the 7.5x55, but I've never used it in the .30/30. Either H or IMR 4198 works well in my .30/30s, and isn't shabby in the .30/06.
Unless you have a Finn M28 or other .308 bored 7.62x54, I doubt the Lee mold will shoot very well. It will be somewhat undersize for a nominal .310 bore. You can get away with undersize bullets when they are jacketed, but undersize cast bullets tend to lead, keyhole, and do all sorts of delightful things. Don't let my opinion sway you from trying, though. Every rifle is a rule unto itself. It isn't likely, but your rifle might shoot just fine with the Lee bullet. Try it and see.
The 170 grain Lee shoots well in my .30/30s, and every other .308 barrel I've tried it in.

AA 5744 is a great favorite of mine .
4227, 4198 and 3031 can work fair also.

Thanks, Charley. I did get a bit ahead of myself in that I plan to get a .310 mold for the 54R . . . but first I want to get my feet wet with the .308 barrels that I have. Thanks to all who responded, and I am always looking for more suggestions.
