I'm looking to start casting bullets for my 22 Hornet.

I would like something along the lines of the Lyman #225107 mould, but it seems these have been scarce for some time. Are custom mould options that would provide something similar available?

I would also like to experiment with hollowpointing using the Forster Universal Hollowpointer and am curious what sort of success others have had using this with 22 caliber cast bullets.

If ever there was a cartridge made for the lead projectile, it's the Hornet!  Not much can be expected from the cartridge in most applications, but it can be done at ranges within limits of the cartridge.

I had a supply of lead gas checked 43gr(including the weight of the GC), with a full load of H-110 (10.4gr), was quite a zipper{it would leave the Contender at 2150-ish feet per second}.  Accuracy was in the 1.5" range at 50 yards, but the barrel was only 8".......  Ran out of these projectiles, and my brother stopped casting them....sold all his stuff, great.  Switched to the 45gr Sierra's and never looked for another.

The only experience I have is the 58 grain gas check Lyman in a 22-250. Not really suitable for the 22-250.

I did a bit of fishing around and it looks like NEI will make up some molds with weights that are appropriate for the Hornet.

Hey,wblodget, If you want an inexpensive mould for the 22,go to Midsouth and check out their 22 Bator from Lee. It casts a very nice little bullet that I think would be great in the hornet.Cheaper, lighter, and easier to use also. My 2 cents worth. leadburner

Nice to see another Blodgett wanting to shoot cast bullets in a Hornet. The Lyman 225438 is considered The Hornet bullet. The twist of your rifle will have great bearing on your choice of bullet in your hornet. The 225215, 225462, the Lee Bator and the RCBS 55FP are all appropriate choices as Ranch Dogs 6 cavity flat nose 22 cal is also a good choice. Hodgdons LiL Gun and AA1680 Re 7 H-4227 A2400 and Unique,Bulls Eye are some good powders to try. Also small pistol primers will insure proper ignition. Air cooled wheel weights seem to work just fine to begin with with water dropping as an option. Lots of fun and experimenting so get started!

I have the Bator 52gr gc, cast of wws it does well at up to 2400fps in .223, a friend using K-Hornets liked it and his 39 and 43 gr , in a double cavity for 2 different bullets from NEI worked well, too. Try different powders and see what does best for you, if you do not have a chrono, you really need one, some are available for under $100, best buy you can make.

Hello, everyone. I have been off site since for some reason, have banned site from work station. Anyway, I have been shooting cast in a 26" Shillen Brl. 1-14" twist, Sharps/Borchardt for over 10 years. The old style (45gr.) Lyman 225415 does well in both 16 & 14" twist. I had Fred Leeth make up custom nose-pour moulds..copy of old Ideal 22636, in both plain base & gas-check styles. With my alloy, bullet weight is 52gr. It took me 5 years of experimenting to equal best jacketed-match loads at 100yds. this included said custom moulds, swaging die to match 1st. band profile to leade angle & dia., nose-first sizing dies, gas-check uniforming tools, & homemade lube. The results are groups in the .3/8" range at 100yds. Now I can't do this every time, and the average is around 1/2 to 5/8", with 3/4" so common as to be boring. Scope is Leupold 12X CPC. sporter stock.
