Bought some new tires today for my company truck. We recently started an account with Tire Center, a multi state operation. I asked who they recycled the used weights to, and was told that they didn't, the employees sold them as scrap. Asked if I could buy some, and was given about 1/2 bucketfull, about 25 pounds. Not a lot, but given the price of leed right now, I'm not going to complain!

Free ia good.

Don't you know that lead is a deadly poison? You should send all that poison to me so I can dispose of it in a contaminated back stop.

When cleaned and cast into ingots, turned out there was only about 14 pounds of WW, and another 6 pounds of pure lead. Still free and appreciated, though.

I never could get my production pot hot enough to melt those pesky clips. The weighty part of the wheel weight melts fine, but the clips - forget it.  ;)

Chinese-made toys and baby furniture will probably turn out to be the next big source of lead for us handloaders. If you have kids at home, hang onto those made-in-China toys. Tire stores around here are pretty miserly with wheel weights. I haven't been able to get them to turn loose of a hanful, let alone a bucket load, even when I'm buying $600 worth of tires from them!

Since you live in Idaho, just travel north ,up to the silver valley area. There are  mountains of the stuff.
Of course you have smelt it outta the rock.
I used to work at the Lucky Friday mine.

Been there! My work used to take me to the Silver Valley now and then, but that's been a few years back. Also been known to hunt around St. Maries now and then.

You're right - it takes a lot of heat to smelt that ore, more than I can muster with my Lee production pot. Besides, I don't need the EPA coming around and declaring my garage a Super Fund site.

If you could melt those clips into your lead alloy what would the brinnel hardness be?

Dunno. Wonder how hard the melt would be if I ground up some Viagra and stirred it in ...

That would not work. If the alloy stayed hard for more than 4 hours you would have to take it to the doctor.
