Hi Guys -

My old man is reliving his childhood as he approaches his 67th birthday.  He has a winchester .401 SLR that has been in my family since the rifle was purchased new (whenever the heck that was)  He used to deer hunt with it as a boy in northern MN and always said it was a really fun rifle to shoot.  This rifle is really old.

Anyways, ammuntion for this thing is virtually non-existant, but since I'm getting into reloading for my ar15, I was thinking, would it be possible to make brass from possibly another type of case and cast the bullets?

I actually did see sizing dies for a .401 SLR someplace, but in my infinite wisdom, didn't mark the page for future reference.  DUH!.

Could anyone point me in the direction of where I could possible get reloading components and load infor for this obscure caliber?  Any other info on this particular round/rifle is also GREATLY appreciated.  I would love to be able to show up on his next birthday with a couple of boxes of .401 ammo that he could cap off at the range.  I'm sure it would make his day

Thank Gents!

Joe

Midway has Redding dies for the .401WSL for $67.99. Brass and bullets will be the problem. From what I've read, .401 cases can be formed from .35 Remington or oddly enough, 7.62x39. Both will require some major work. Easiest to buy formed brass from Buffalo arms, $1 each, or $19/20. I'm sure they have bullets available, too, but I didn't look.

Never loaded for the .401, but do load its little brother, the .351 WSL.

When you reach the point, I can scan an old Lyman manual with .401 data in it for you.

Very Cool!  Thanks!

Do you know if the .401 SLR bullet is actually .401 in diamter or is it bigger/smaller (i.e the .223 is actually .224).

Buffalo Arms (thanks for the link btw) has .401 diameter cast bullets too!

I could actually pull this off and have some shells for his next birthday.

Thanks Again!!

Joe

According to my references the Model 1910 was made from 1910 to 1936. 20,787 were made. PM me your s/n, if you like, and I will look up your year of manufacture.

Never mind, small enough to upload and you can't read it.

200 grain jacketed

start                                                                   max

Unique 13 grains   1597 FPS             15.3 grains      1811 FPS

A2400   22.0 Grains   1718 FPS          24.7 Grains      1915 FPS

212 grain cast

Unique    12.0 1618 FPS                       14.9        1845 FPS

2400        21.0   1773 FPS                    23.5        1960 FPS

IMR 4227   26.0    1915 FPS                 29.0 (compressed)  2074 FPS

Maximum case length, 1.5"

Trim Length, 1.495"  Max OAL, 2.005"

For the  M1907 in .351, I found reliable function at about midrange of the given powder charges. I would suspect the M1910 will be similar.
