Linotype is good hard stuff for casting bullets. Basically every bullet caster will line up to get that stuff if you don't get there first.

that's a great deal for linotype!! get it!   200 lbs should almost last a guy a lifetime of casting bullets i would think....  i was given a bar of linotype from the local print shop several years ago and haven't used any of it... i spose it's a about a 20# bar or so... my reloading casting teacher and mentor said linotype makes hard lighter bullets when cast............................

There are some other "printer's alloys" out there...monotype, and some others. They are lead/tin/antimoney alloys.

To me, lino is a special purpose alloy, harder than I need or want for most purposes. The little I have I usually cut with pure lead, or wheel weights.

I agree with Charlie. If you're going to cast bullets with it you may want to cut it with pure lead or wheel weights unless you're casting hard slugs for a big bore handgun or rifle. It's simply too hard for your everyday muzzleloader, not to mention a waste of good resources. Linotype is getting harder to come by let alone cheap lino.

the only reason i keep lino is to add antimony to my lyman #2 eq mixes from ww when needed.  lino is about 12% antimony.ww is about 4%.bought some mono and that is 19%. ww with 2% tin added will cast beautiful and can be heat treated to about 30bhn which is harder than lino will go.the key ingredient to ht an alloy is arsenic which is not present in lino but is in ww.

it takes a while sometimes to get your mould up to temp so don't be too discouraged... until your mould is up to temp your bullets will look like crap...   there is alot of good experience on this board so if you have questions don't hesitate to ask...   all the bullets i've ever cast turned out great because they were recycled from bullets.... an indoor range cleanout  is a great place to get lead!   i do think if i ever use the linotype i have it will be cut with other softer lead.....  tell us how you're getting along with casting......

I think you will find the linotype is too hard for a muzzle loader. Most do best with pure lead. Velocities with  muzzle loaders usualy run on the low side to effect good expanion with a hard bullets, which is one reaon pure lead works best in most cases.

Hoever , you can probably trade that lintotype for at least 1 to 3 for pure lead
