Howdy,

I just cleaned out my fathers house, had to sell it he passed away a few months back. It's hard even reloading and shooting without thinking about him since he got me into both hobbies when I was just a little kid. (sorry for the mushy stuff)  I accquired all of his reloading equipment and added it to mine, Yikes I got a lot of sorting to do.

Anyhow, I remember back in the 80's my father swaging bullets, I helped him a little with it but dont remember much. Is swaging bullets still a popular option or has it gone to the way of the dinosaur?
On the other hand I do remember how to cast bullets :thumbs:and have a load of old wheelweights and lead jackets from the vent stacks on roofs (I am a Roofing Contractor) so lead is not a problem.

I just set up my casting area in the garage, the Mrs loves the smell of Hoppes #9 from my basement reloading area but not the Lead casting smell :nut:.

Any of you still Swage bullets? or should I just stick with the casting?

Only thing I swag is air rifle pellets.  The ones that come in those 500 pack boxes are normally damaged, and being the accuracy freak I am.....well, you know!!

Scott (sorry for your loss) B

swaging is usually done with lead wire or a soft cast core.due to the alloy a swaged bullet will be limited as to velocity.cast bullets can be pushed to over 2500 fps with the right alloy and lube.factory lead bullets ,such as speer, are swaged when fast production is desired.if i could only have one method to produce lead bullets it would be casting.

Wheezengeezer is right, swaging is for sub-sonic use, even in black powder rifles. The alloy must be soft  to swage it, and it is best suited for the occasional hunting bullet in old rifles, or paper patching bullets. That being said, if you are so inclined, there is a market for swaged bullets for paper patching with some hard core Schuetzen shooters. If you are inclined to send that swageing outfit to a good home, I'd be interested, as I have been thinking of doing just that for my black powder cartridge rifles.
