Well this project is coming along. Tomorrow, I will put down the planking. Then I will put some garden fabric over the planking, so the sand flooring doesn't drain out thru the cracks. The sand is an insulate so anything dropped with not burn the floor.
Then some sill seal for where the walls will go up on.
I just order on line a Welders First Aid Kit and 10 Lb Fire Extinguisher with a cabinet for same.
Then it depends on the weather and money for the rest of the materials, I do have 40 4' x 12' pieces of corrugated roofing steel. I think I won't need that much for this building. Plus I have a couple of gallons of roof/foundation seal still left over from coating the houses foundation.

Got my 10 lb fire extingusher with cabinet and what is listed as a Welder First Aid Kit today, these will go in to the building once the weather breaks and can get the building done.

| What are you going to use your foundry for, Jerry? You mentioned elsewhere that you have made knives. Is that what you're gonna do with it?

I forge and grind knives out, but I do cast my own guards and pommels. Most of non gun related casting is out of bronze or aluminum. I want to move my lead works out of the garage that is under the house, so it will move out to the foundry building

Here are some books on casting in metals:
The Complete Handbook of Sand Casting by C.W. Ammen
Lost=Wax Casting: Old, New and Inexpensive Methods by Fred R. Sias
Lost-Wax Casting A practitioners Manual, by Wilburt Feinberg
Modeling Wax for Jewelry and Sculpture by Lawrence Kallen berg
Gas Burners for Forges, Furnaces and Kilns, by Michael Porter
These are very good books for the introduction to casting, but finding a caster that uses Sand Molds or lost wax will teach you a lot also.
Hope this helps some one,
Jerry

Tomorrow the rest of the lumber shows up for the foundry building and Saturday my helpers will come over. We should get most of it done on Saturday. Pictures will follow.

Today we started on building the walls for this bbuilding, but with all good construction, we planned this out right. We put down garden fabric for the sand box which is our fire proof flooring.

We built two of the 4 walls today and installed them. We have five stringers across the top, as well as the braces. Monday we will get the rest of the walls done and probably build the trusses for the roof.
I have 2 thermostatically controlled vents to install on this building. and we will have a very high ceiling to help with air flow.

Coming along well!
Congrats on getting the lead casting out of the garage(that's under the house). Those fumes must have built up in there over time, and that can't be healthy. The attached photo above....can you make it bigger? I don't need reading glasses, just longer arms.

| How does the OSB stand up to your climate? I hate the stuff, but almost every builder in this part of the country uses it.

Need suggestions.
I want to put something up on the inside walls that if fire resistant or flame retardant. I remember something like concrete board, but not sure of what it is called or where possible to get it.
Thanks in advance,
Jerry

| Wonderboard is a cement bord available at Home despot. It is the most fire resistant...Then there is tile backer board. It is a little less fire resistant but it has a nicer surface.Depending what it is going to be up against you could go as far as spacing the board off of the wall a little so it has an air gap giving it even more resistance to heat transfer.Several types and or brands of cement based board are available at most building suppliers depending what you need.....Robin

Robin,
Thanks, this is an 8' x 8' x 8'work area, with an area less than 15 cubic foot area out of the total 512 cubic foot area, that can genrate up to 1600 Degree F. I have 2 auto opening/closing vents to put in, plus I want to leave an area along the roof line open for air circulation. That will probably be "filtered" with chicken wire and metal fabric (screen porch stuff). The floor will be 2 to 3 inches of sand on top of garden fabric, which is on top treated lumber.
I did search the net and found Durock cement board, that I can find near me. The nearest Home Despot is 45 minutes on the other side of Cabela from me. It comes in 3' x 5' sheets, so I may have to rethink some of my stud walls to get the right support for the Durock.
I need to keep as much space open, so two people can pick up a crucible, with one on either side of the crucible with two long pickup bars.
Jerry

We have all four walls done, also the stringer across the top for support and built the roof trusses today. Pictures will be forth coming.
Need to think about running some copper out to this building, and also where to install the large propane tank.
After all the wood is done, we will paint this building with Gardener Foundation and Roof Seal to protect the chip board. Then put the sheet steel roof on.
Jerry

The sheeting for the roof is on, we will put the side panels on the roof trusses this afternoon, then it will be time to put the first coat of paint on the building. Then the sheet steel roof, then paint it again.

Now it is waiting for me to paint it this week, then put in the vents and get the sheet steel roof on it. There will be some 2 x 8 trim on the sides where the trusses meet the top plates.
The inside has a floor covered with garden fabric and then it will be covered with a 2 inches of sand.
The work stand with be 36" x 36 " and be set in the building before I put the door on it.

Here is my foundry building being coated with Gardener Foundation and Roof Seal.
This will preserve the wood during bad weather. Next we will put on the steel roof and work on the inside stuff. I am planning on putting up Durock on the inside near the areas that we will be smelting.
