Ranch:

When I made my rifle, I used the Greenhill formula for twist and bullet length.  My rifle has a 28 inch twist and I am stuck with the original bullet length.  Longer and heavier just tumble.  If he uses those heavy bullets, then he must have a faster twist.  Were I to do this again, I would go with the twist that is common with the 40-65 as folks are shooting heavier bullets with that twist in the 40 calibers.  I don't mind my rifle's twist as I have worked around it.  The wind can play hell tho if one isn't careful.

He either used a 14 or a 16 inch twist.

My wife is shooting a roller rebarred, and chambered to 40-65. It's a greenmtn barrel with a 16 inch twist. Mostly we shoot either the Lyman snover or the Rcbs 400 CSA in it. With 58 grs goex 3f express it holds up well to 1000 yds, but the wind can really raise  holy ned with it at distance.

My 405 with its 14 inch twist utilizes bullet from 200 to 400 grs fairly well. The hard part is getting them to the .413 diameter need to keep leading at a minimum. Altho I've had reasonable accuracy and minimal leading with .411 gaschecked bullet.

My favorite toy right now is my 45-75. Haven't hunted with it yet but---! The rifle that I hunt with but not targets is my '86 45-90. Over the years, that rifle has tagged alot of game. It is a hunter's rifle, not a "Collectible" but there are those that think it should be.

I shot my 1886 40-82 today with this load, AA 8700 68 Grains, Mag Primer, and original 260 lead head I casted with Wheel weights. Got 30 holes in 5" at 50 yards.

Hey! sounds good to me, when you go for 100yds let us know the result, by the way how was the shoulder after that many rounds? My courage has lessened after 66 years. Still haven't pulled the trigger on my old weapon.

Recoil is still less than my 45-70. I'am goina try some 300 Resized 405 Win lead bullets  soon also. I'll give a follow up. I hope to still hear about some more loads for the old 40-82.

For your information.  I use 50 grains of 3031 with a kapok filler under a 260 grain jacketed softnose in one of my old '86's.  In my custom Model 71 that was rebarreled to 40-82, I use 58 grains of 3031.  In my long range Rolly block, I use 60 grains of fffg a cardboard wad and a 260 grain paper patched bullet.  One word of caution tho, if you think that using a resized 300 grain or larger weight bullet in an old barrel, you better slug that bore and find out what the bore diameter and twist is.  If it is 1:28 inches as was and is the norm for that caliber, then that heavy bullet will tumble and keyhole.  I know from my own experience.  This is a great flat shooting caliber if treated right.  If you use the Greenhill formula, you can get the proper bullet length for the twist.  If you do this, you will find that the original bullet length is what you are stuck with.  If you use a new barrel with the same twist as the 40-65 then you can shoot a heavier bullet.
