I have an older 58 cal H&R style muzzle loader. Can I use Pyrodex poweder in lieu of black powder? Is it the same measurement, etc 100 gr to 100 gr?

Yu should be able to use Pyrodex R/S in .58. Load volume for volume, actual weight will be different. Remember, though, there is a REASON many BP shooters refer to it as Pyrocrap.
I prefer BP personally, because I shoot mostly flinters.

Charley,
I am having trouble finding BP these days. Most of the dealers don't stock it when they can get it.
Pyrodex is about equal load trade offs, but as always, start low and work your way up to what you thing the load maybe.
All disclaimers apply.

Bluetick, As Charley stated just remember it's volume for volume not weight for weight and you'll be fine. I used it in my .54 Ethan Allen percussion sidelock all the time. For my initial hunting load every morning though I often pulled the clean out screw from the snail and put a pinch of FFFF Black or smokeless ball right under the nipple in the snail. Just a tiny bit to ensure that the pyrodex lit. I'm talking an amount the size of a lead pencil eraser. (Disclaimer time here. You cannot load full charges of smokeless in a muzzleloader. EVER!!!! Never know who might read this and yes I know you can use smokeless in Savage inlines.) Pyrodex does get old rather quickly and deteriorates in the bottle. RD

Yes just use the same measure setting . It most likely won't be as accurate, the fouling is just as corrosive so cleaning is just as important.
If you can't get real bp locally its as simple ordering from Grafs (they'll ship 1lb if you want to spend the hazmat) or Powder Inc ships in 5 lb lots.

Yep,them muzzel loaders are kind of a bitch to clean,no matter what you use in them.Smokeless substitutes are harder to ignite, but desirable when black is hard to get.The only downside to black is the fouling can be a bother.I have had a can of pyro that was produced before the mishap in the late 70's.It was good for 20 years.

u mite also try triple 7 it cleans easier but the key to most all black substitutes is to use volumetric charges as most imitations are actually lighter in weight but the volume measurement is what works, one of the most important things is to make sure the projectile is set firmly against the powder- ie; no air space left

I use Triple 7 and really like it. Shoots good and clean up is a breeze.

never had a problem with pyrodex in my 54 cal hawkens percussion, just like any other BP or substitue as mentioned above measure by volume and make sure the substitute is appropriate for the grain size (ffg, ffffg, etc.) you were using in black powder Last edited on Thu Oct 8th, 2009 01:31 PM by leadhead

A friend over in Marshall County, Just north of Cameron, has done some great shooting with 777 in a replica 54 caliber rifle. He did a 250 yard kill shot last deer season with a Maxi and "triple Lucky" as he calls it.
I want to try some in my Greyhawk and my Inline before saying anything, but I don't use BP weapon as an every day rifle and pistols, but I can if I need to.
So maybe I will go down to my local Mom and Pops to gets some pellets and powder, people are hording BP subsitutes just as much smokeless powders.
I still wish I could get some real BP.
