I am looking for a couple of case gauges for 308 and 223. Which brand is recommended and I have read/heard the Dillon ones are not too precise. Thanks.

I use a set of Harbor Frieght calipers on my loading bench, along with my case gauges.

I have a set of calipers from work that failed the last calibration on the tail. If they fail calibration for any reason they are junked. Even though I.D. and O.D. on the head end are in mint they have to throw them out. Work fine for me for measuring case length and COL and Ø.
Just set them where you need them and lock and you have a case gauge.

With only dial calipers, does any one worry about the headspace length? with the case gauge it seems so much simpler by just dropping the round into the gauge to see if it needs trimming or the headspace is too little or excessive right?

ar15, In theory yes. But there are some chambers out there that aren't cut to SAAMI specs and some bolts that might not headspace right. Case gauges are good but you still have to be alert. Calipers seem to work well for most people. RD

Lyman and Forster make good gauges.

All a conventional cartridge/case gage will tell you is if the loaded round will fit into any SAAMI chamber ever made for that carridge. An RCBS Precision Case Mic, Hornady LnL Case gage WITH a dial/digital caliper, etc. will allow you to read and adjust the results of your sizing method to make your ammo closely fit YOUR rifle, not everyone elses. And that's a good thing!

A good tool to have, but won't tell you if the chamber will go in. That's a job for a chamber gauge.

Thanks everyone. I decided to pick up a Hornady headspace gauge with bushings and the OAL gauge.

ar15fanboy ......
If you want to know how your handloads to fit your chamber perfectly. Consider this:
- A case gauge checks ammo within a few thou of the "standard" dimension.
- Calipers can check case length and OAL - not headspace.
However, if you want to know how YOUR handloads fit in YOUR particular chamber (at the shoulder) this is how it's done. Our Digital Headspace Gauge compares one of your resized cases (at the shoulder) to one of your fired cases. The difference displayed is the chamber clearance in your rifle. This makes it easy to set your die height perfectly.

This gauge works on ALL calibers. As a bonus, it can also show the bullet "jump" to your rifling. Check it out on our website.
