I picked up a set of Lyman .223 dies on e-bay for just over $10.00 delivery included. When they arrived they were. as promised, just like new. Only problem is that they are small base. The dollars involved here don't warrant the hassle of returning etc. I've never used small base dies and realize that they are unneeded for the bolt action and single shot guns I'll be loading for. If I use them will they overwork the brass and shorten case life? RD Last edited on Sun Jul 2nd, 2006 01:54 AM by Rockydog

Hi Rockydog,
I have never used smallbase dies, but I use a single shot rifle. I think you could try backing off on the sizing die a couple of turns. You don't need to size your neck but about .125", or you could do what I do. I use the Lee Collet Die. It only sizes the neck. I size my cases this way until they won't fall in the chamber easily, which is about 3 or 4 times.
I hope I have been of help. Good luck.

I have used the small base dies in the 308 and 30-06 for the Win and Rem autoloaders , but as far as case life, auto rifles take their toll much quicker than bolt or single shots, but i would say the case life would be shorter with SB the Standard dies because the more you work the brass the shorter the life.

Gents
some info on the short base vs. Standard dies?
Ive never seen or heard of a short base in my neck off the woods? What is the actual difference between the two?
All the best

Small based dies are only used in semi-autos, lever and on some occasions a very tight chambered rifle, they resize the case to smaller than SAAMI specs.

It just occured to me that maybe I'll need to get a Ruger Ranch Rifle or an AR to utilize these dies. RD

Small base dies will work your brass much harder than persay a neck sized cartridge or even a standard full length sizing would..Tell ya what,if you are not happy with them.I run across die sets all the time.If I find ya a set of FL 223 Rem dies, would you swap them even?I pay shipping on my end,you pay shipping on yours?

Gene, I really appreciate the offer and I certainly would consider that. There's no rush as I'm just going to reload for a buddy this winter for next spring's dog hunt. I may just have to buy a rifle and go along. RD
