Is it needed?  The RCBS one is like $12

Yes, unless you like to use your fingers. A lot of ball and flake powders will cycle though mots powder measures, but stick powders usualy  don't flow as easily.

I typically set my measure about a 1/2 gr light and then trickle the remaining in. I use a lot of 4831  though

I top off everything I reload for off with an RCBS trickler.  It's a cheap piece of equipment that I consider a must-have on my bench.

If you are reloading for rifles -- yes.

I have both a Dillon and a RCBS powder measure.  If I am reloading pistol shells, I use the Dillon measure mounted on my Dillon press, and everything is quick and easy.

For rifle reloading, I have my RCBS powder measure permantly mounted behind my Dillon and Rockchucker presses and a powder trickler mounted over my RCBS scale.  I use alot of 4831 and 7828 powders, and have found that powder measurers do not consistantly throw the same weight of powder.  Therefore, like Saddlesore said, I set my powder measure set to throw a bit less than the charge that I want, then trickle each charge to the exact weight, then continue loading in whichever press I am using.

Call me cheap, but I just use the Lee dipper that came with the dies, and carefully tap in the exact amount.

For me the trickler is a part of the reloading scale.

Lyman has thought the same way and offers a scale which has a trickler aside the weighing platform and a storage compartment for it .

I do have several scales which do work well, so buying a fourth one is not a good investment, but when I were starting with reloading, this Lyman scale would be a serious thing to think of.

I have one and I personally think is is mandatory for my reloading. I'm starting to reload for .380 and the range of powder for the small case is very low. I'm using VV N310 and the minimum is 2.2 grains, and the max is 2.6 grains.  .4 grains isn't a very wide swing and doesn't leave you alot of room for error. Consequently, the only way to work up my loads without blowing up my little P3AT is to use a powder trickler to be exact in the loads for this pistol. I use a powder trickler for every round I load. I can get close with a dipper, but I want the correct powder charge when filling the cases.  I have the aluminum powder trickler, not a plastic one, and I don't have a progressive press, just a couple of small Lee reloader presses. My powder trickler is one of my mose valuable pieces of reloading equipment as it permits me to load with safety and without the worry of an overload.

I can't imagine doing my reloading without one. I do small batches, so I don't use the Powder measure very often. I use the Lee dippers and top off with the trickler.

This is what I am doing for right now until I can afford a good measure, But its a time consuming task.

just picked up two Rcbs's on a trade, and will contiue to use my dippers and now instead of shaking a little bit out of a second small scoop into the pan , now I can just trickle the last little bit. Nice. :woot:

I have a trickler that I use for some loads, mainly when I am know I am getting to the high end of a safe load.

But there should always be trickler on your bench, it is something that once you start using it, you will wonder how you lived without it.

RCBS works.  The Hornady doesn't!

Also, powder measure+mech scale+trickler beats a full auto unit every time, IMO.:troll:

I can't believe I went so long without a trickler. I'll never be without one again.

I have to disagree with the last part:

I recently acquired an RCBS Chargemaster como & it hands down beats doing things the old way for precision loads.
