I have been using RCBS dies for longtime and have been doing some reading in the Hornady ND dies are they any better?  From what I've read they are head and shoulders above RCBS (no pun intended)

I have some and like  them very much.  As to whether they are better  than RCBS, I don't know but I like the way bullets are centered and seated.  The locking rings are much superior also.

That's the main reason I began buying them.  Although they are more expensive than RCBS.

The decapping pin and expander button is a much better design. I do like the seater also, I get runouts from it almost on par with a Match seater.

I was sizing some 45-70 brass, and the flash hole was not centered on one case. Now the decaper isn't straight, but Hornady has a warranty on their dies, so I will proabably call them and see about a new die and decapping rod.

Then I can use the old sizer die for a quick taper crimp die, if I don't put the case all the way into the sizing die.

Make sure your spring clip at the bottom of the seating die is fully seated in its groove. Or it may be worn or bent or something. It should have a short bent piece that sticks through a hole in the side of the die to keep the guts in place. All my HND die sets came with a spare spring clip in the die box, in the plastic wrapper with the instructions and allen wrench.

I have changed over to Hornady dies almost exclusivly. I still use the old Weatherby dies i got when i bought my 257 WBY many years ago.

I have not had any problems with the Hornady dies, and gave my RCBS dies away.

I have had that same problem with my 223 seater die. I put a small diameter long handled allen wrench with a small vice grip clamped to the top through the hole in the top of the seater die.

Works 100%.

I did make sure the spring clip at the bottom was seated correctly. It is not holding the plunger. I have used both springs, the sad thing is that I have only loaded 50 bullets using both springs!!!

I sent Hornandy a not so nice text message. But I kinda like the seater die. I'll give them another shot. But I am close to pulling the trigger and buying rcbs dies.

I bought two sets of em ,for my 25-06 and 7mm Rem Mag a few years ago.
They suck!!!!!
I ended up throwing em in  the corner of my reloading room, went and got online and ordered me new dies from Redding to replace them.
The 7mm sizing die would come apart after a bit of use.It finally pissed me off and I junked both sets.I should have known better to buy other than RCBS or Redding which have both been excellent in  all the chamberings I have em in.
LawDogg,I sympathize...I wasted my money on em.

That spring they use to hold the plunger in is small and not strong enough to deal with the pressure involved in seating the bullet.

The spring clip is not supposed to deal with the pressure involved in seating the bullet. There is a shoulder inside the die body that engages the top of the sleeve, stopping it from moving upward during seating; the seating adjustment screw stops the plunger's (seating plug's) upward travel during seating. The spring clip only engages the sleeve (not the plunger/plug) when it slides back down as you retract the seated cartridge from the die, keeping the sleeve, and the plunger in it, from falling out of the die.

Is the entire sleeve and plunger coming out, or just the plunger? If the latter, you have either a bad plunger or bad sleeve. The plunger should be a close fit in the the upper end of the sleeve, and the plunger also has a head on it to keep it from sliding down and out of the sleeve.

Remove the sleeve, and ensure that its lower end fits easily over the neck of your sized cartridge. If it is too small, it may be jamming on the cartridge neck, in which case the spring clip would have to exert enough force to unjam the sleeve from the neck as the cartridge is withdrawn.

Hope this helps,

Andy

That sentance did not make sense!! The entire sleeve and plunger come out when I pull the handle up after seating the bullet.

I haven't used any of them for rifle, but I do like the Titanium Nitrate <?> inserts in the pistol dies. I haven't experienced any problems with them.
