If I can figure out which rifle and pistol combination that I want to keep at the cabin I want to build, I think I am buy some Lee Loaders and stock some basics to keep on hand, just in case. Food and water are easy, I even have a place to dress out a deer and smoke the meat.
The rifles are a choice of 30-30, 35 Rem, 45-70, 308 Win, not sure what else I have for an all around rilfe. This would have to be for hunting most of time and protection maybe.
The pistol would be a toss up between my S & W 586 and one of my Kimber 1911s. So it would be a 38/357 or a 45 ACP.
Any thoughts on this idea?
Jerry

For the rifle I would do the 30/30 can take small / large game. I am assuming its a Lever action. Well if it was good enuf for over 100 years in the woods its still good now.
Pistol wise I would do a Revolver. A kimber 45 is a nice piece but if a spring or an extractor broke in the middle of nowhere your up a creek. Revolver is simple, handy, very reliable and a 357 Mag / 38 spl. can be used for hunting, self-defense etc.
downside is slow to reload compared to a 45 but if you can't hit your target with 6 shots your screwed anyhow When I rifle hunt I carry a Ruger sp101 as a sidearm just in case of the occasional tree hugger shooting at me or a guy trying to take my deer (Almost happened in Kentucky).

I would take the revolver for its construction; you can depend on it and do only need one hand to operate it in case of a mis-fire, and a .357 mag. round has good all around power.
For the rifle I would choose a .308W. bolt action with a magazine ; if you know how to place your bullet well into the target, there is not much it cannot do for you.

I've never been a fan of Lee Loaders, I hate smacking tools with a hammer. I'd rather buy a Lee handpress and standard dies. The handpress is only a couple bucks more, and I think gives you more options when loading.
Nothing wrong with the .30/30, but for something like this I would pick the revolver over the autopistol, and I'm an autopistol guy.

Charley,
That small field hand press is a very good idea.
