Hi Guys -

Well, I've polished about 300 5.56x45 cases by hand (scotchbrite and my zip trim) and all I have to say is...

SCREW THAT!!  My hand is all gimped up from that monkey business.

I have only about 4700 more to go.  So, I'm looking at the  Lyman Turbo 2500 Pro Magnum Case Tumbler 110 Volt.  Any other recommendations?  I need something that will hold up to VOLUME.  I was also going to use the Lyman media (the green stuff.

Do you guys with tumbers polish before or after decaping?  I trying to decide if I need to get the lee univeral decapping die and decap them first, polish, then resize.  The brass is pretty scuzzy, and I'm not sure I want to put them thru my FL die without some sort of cleaning.

Much thanks!

Joe

i got a big thumblertumbler a few years ago that holds several hundred 3006 cases and does real well at cleaning them up.......... i have tumbled both deprimed and primers in the only thing i don't like too much about tumbling with deprimed is media gets stuck in the flash hole on most of the cases and it really don't the primer pockets clean anyhow....    i almost always tumble brass first then resize-deprime and then use a small srewdriver to make a quick turn inside the primer pocket...

My brass never gets really dirty from the outside- The inside does not get clean enough to my liking anyway(Bottle neck rifle cases), so I deprime- resize first, than tumble-no resizing marks on the cases anymore.

Do you find that your tumbling media does not last as long due to the fact that you are also "cleaning" the case lube off your brass as well?  I have  heard that some reloaders actually have two batches of media....one for case lube removal and another for the final polish.  I have boiled mine with dishwasher soap after resizing, drying in oven at about 240 degrees and then final tumbling to polish up.  Brass cleans up pretty good.  Also curious what type of media you might recommend.

Thanks!

Joe, I've got one of the smaller Lyman tumblers and it works great. I use ground walnut hulls from a pet store. They use it in small animal cages. Works as well as any commercial media at 1/3 the price. I freshen it up every once in a while with a 1/2 teaspoon of Flitz polishing additive. I've tumbled a couple of thousand cases on my first 5 pound bag and still have some left over. I also put a 3X3" piece of dryer sheet in each batch. It really cuts down on the dust. I'm also planning on getting a big cookie sheet to set mine on because no matter how hard I try, I always get media all over the bench when emptying the batch. RD

to minimize getting media all over go the dollar store and get a big plastic strainer and put it over an ice cream bucket an sift the media into the ice cream bucket................

Amen to Rockydog!  Pet store also has corn cob-not crushed really fine like the "media", but it works just great for cheap.

My Lyman 1200 tumbler handles a few hundred pistol brass at a time and does a great job.  I've seen 'em for 60-80 dollars online (cheaperthandirt.com actually is).

I only tumble after decapping when I'm in the mood for really pretty cartridges, but I'm only reloading for pistols.

My "spousal unit" gives me no end of grief for the inevitable sprinkling around the tumbler. Theres no gettin' around it.

I use two tumblers, Lyman Turbo 1200, also use a Midway. I de-cap before tumbling, using Lee de-capper. I start with Lyman's red media(jeweler's rouge), and finish in the other tumbler with the green media. For discolored brass, dissolve a small can of Cream of Tarter in a gallon of water and soak the cases in it, using a glass or plastic container, not metal. Then tumble. This trick was used by the old black powder shooters. Only takes a little while, you can see the cleaning action in progress. Raid your wife's spice rack, or buy the Cream of Tarter at the grocery store.

I have 3 tumblers and they are all Lyman.  You won't go wrong. The newest is the one that you listed.  A 2200 and my original 1200, which is 23 years old and still going strong.

My Lyman 1200 i have had for years and it is still working great, but with the amount of brass you are cleaning i believe i would go with the bigger model.

I use the RCBS mega vibrator.  It will hold about 225 30.06 brass and up to 400 .38 brass.  Does a good job.

Here's my system: fired brass gets decapped, tumbled in my 30-some year old Thumlers, then sized... Primer pockets get fairly clean..

I leave the de-capping pin in the sizing die to remove any media that sticks in the flash hole..

Lyman's green media works best for me of all that I have tried.. When it gets discolored, I put in a half inch piece of Flitz or Simichrome polish to pep things up a bit..

Right now I have a project going that won't require polishing, just a good cleaning.. I thought it was a good idea to buy a thousand pulled-down LC 69 '06 cases. They need to be flash hole swaged and sized..  So far I've done about 300... Oh well, - the story of my life: Seemed like a good idea at the time!!
