The main reason I keep up with the latest manuals is to keep up with the latest bullets. Hornady for example have changed most all pistol bullets to XTP's from their older JHP designs. Rifle bullets they've added SST, V-Max, A-Max, Interbonds etc. None of these bullets were available in old Hornady manuals. I'm still using the same primers, cases, and powders that I've used in my loads for years. Other manufacturers have changed or added lots of new bullets also. Is it absolutely necessary, NO. With online data from powder and ammunition companies (not data posted by fellow reloaders) I would feel secure using start data and working up. I do read data from fellow reloaders and compare it to published data. Most all posters of personal data list safe accurate data but some I've thought to be a little warm!

Since reloading is a fun interesting hobby for me, I just want the latest published data. I have Hornady, Lyman, Speer, Nosler, Sierra, Accurate Arms, and the latest load guides from VithtaVuori, Alliant, Hodgdon, and miss not having IMR or Winchester Guides since they are no longer published.
