I was in Home Depot yesterday and saw something that got me thinking. They have these large "on site" tool boxes that are made by Rigid. They are quite large, deep, and heavy. They come with pneumatic assited door lifts like a hatchback on a car. It looked like it would make a nice sturdy gun safe. The interior is bare bones metal, but it wouldn't take much to carpet it. It has several places to padlock it closed. The bottom had boxed metal runners for lifting and moving it with a fork lift. These had holes in them also which you could use for bolting it to the floor if you chose to. The price was $255.00. I tried to lift one end and it was HEAVY! The only thing wrong was the color, (orange).  That would be easy enough to fix with some of that heavy "krinkle finish" paint. It comes in several different colors. If your good with woodworking you could even make up some nice felt covered wood racks for the inside. They would hold a lot of guns for sure. It looked nice and I'm thinking in the future when mine are full, (somehow that doesn't take long!), I just might invest in one. You can't beat the price for what you get.   billt.

Just bought one today for one of my fleet. Lowes has another brand, they are green, i think, instead of HD's orange. Both would make a decent security box for guns.

If you have any contacts with railroaders, the surplus metal signal boxes make pretty good security boxes as well.

Go to the tool section and ask for a job box.

I KNOW YOUR POST IS OLD, BUT I THOUGHT I WOULD SHARE WHAT I HAVE FOUND. IF YOU HAVE  ANY KIND OF A SALVAGE YARD WHERE YOU ARE, CHECK AND SEE IF THEY HAVE ANY CABINETS THAT WERE USED FOR COMMERCIAL POWER PANELS OR ANYTHING THAT WAS HIGH VOLTAGE. ALOT OF TIMES THESE CABINETS WILL BE THE RIGHT HEIGHT AND HAVE DOUBLE DOORS. MOST OF THE ONES I'VE SEEN HAVE AT LEAST 1/4 INCH THICK WALLS. YOU CAN USUALLY GET THEM BY WEIGHT AS THEY ARE HEADED TO THE RECYCLERS.

There is/was a company who actually makes safes like this. They have a fire resistant lining and a rack system inside. They also have a padded vinyl top and can be used as a seating bench in a basement rec room etc. I have no idea when or where they were made but one of my gun dealer buddies had one in his office where he kept collector stuff he was saving for "special" customers. He seemed to know everybodies weaknesses and specialized in satifying them with trades and purchases. RD

I'm looking into one of the 348 Model chests from Greenlee. What I like about them is the locking latches are in recessed wells so they can't be gotten to with bolt cutters or torches. I plan to cover the bottom with a half ton of shot, (40 bags), which will make it all but immovable after it's placed. The entire unit could be covered with a decorative tapestry or saddle blanket, and a lamp placed on top, and no one would even know what it was. These are very well built units, and are quite reasonable for the space and security they provide. After purchasing 4 gun safes thru the years I'm convinced most all are way overpriced for what you get. This is a viable alternative. Plus you don't need a WWF tag team to deliver and place it.  Bill T.

something to think about, take the above mentioned boxes and line the inside with firerock, it's sheet rock for making fire resistive walls, encase your house caught on fire, your guns should come through unscathed! just a suggestion
