Local gun dealer has one of these. I do like it and it would be a good hunting rifle here in these parts. Does anyone here have any experience with this rifle model and or cartridge?

Thanks!

Oh and of course I do not need this rifle I just wouldn't mind owning it though.

no experience on the rifle ..sadly the round t'was a bit of a thumper in the original 600 series i'd rate it better than a 260 remington lolz umm if u really really wanted it ? u'd be showing it off instead of asking about it lolz the round is indeed capable, the short mag of the 600-660's also kind of handicapped it and didnt let it live up to it's true potential , i suppose one could call it one of the "early" short mags ,if ur rifle has a longer barrel than 16-18" it would help !i'm partial to the 6.5's and this one should perfect for everything but the really huge critters(monster bear or huge-er moose tho with well placed shots it would work -hate ta p.o. a grizz tho !! )

if the price was right i would buy it in a heart beat. even if u dont go over 130gr bullets, your selection is still very diverse. and u always have the action if anything

Well fellows thanks for the replies, but it doesn't matter now because he (the gun shop) also had a Remington manufactured U.S.1917 that was sporterized and rebarreled (Hart barrel to boot) to 7mm Mag. Well I have a sweet tooth for those old Eddystones (U.S. Enfields) and I didn't have a 7mm Mag. I do now:cool:

Yeah well he also had a Marlin 1895ss (of course it's in 45-70). Tomorrow he will be without that rifle, but I will be without my Remington 11-87. But I consider that a good trade. We will see if that 673 is still at his shop come this spring:wink:

Ballistically the 6.5 mag is a twin to the 6.5x284,I think it would have been a success if Remington had brought it out in a 22" barreled rifle. The 7 mag would have failed if brought out in a short barrel.A hunting buddy of mine had one in an original model 600 with 18 1/2" barrel, it was horrendously load and velocity wasn't any better than a 6.5x55. Nothing wrong with the cartridge, they just put it in the wrong rifle.

The 6.5 Rem mag not only needed a longer barrel but also heavier bullet's. Seem's I remember the heaviest load avaliable was a 120gr bullet. Basiclly the same as the 6.5-284 and the 6.5-06. Now if Rem will just make some heavier loads for it.

ahhh but thaz why we load our own lolz , i love the various 6.5's and yup i know the bigger ones can be bore burners and i still went and got one lolz but not hampered by mag size ( wouldnt mind a 30"-32" pipe tho just for grins) the original 600 is a sweet rifle ,a dandy packing thing but agreed about the two rem mags in it

Didn't the origional 6.5 Rem come in the 660 with the laminate stock and 20" barrel?

I have been using two 6.5 Rem Mags for the last 12 years or so in Nunavut and the NWT. One is a 660 which shoots 120 Sierras at 3/4MOA with RL19. The velocity in the 20" barrel is closing in on 3100ft/sec. A 120 6.5 has the same SD as a 130, 270 bullet or a 165 30 caliber bullet. This is my sheep and caribou rifle. 125 Nosler Partition or 120 TSX's at 3000ft/sec shoot nearly as well and penetrate better than the Sierra. These are good all-round loads. I have killed about 2 dozen caribou with the Sierra bullet and it knocks them flat but core separates at times. On caribou this hasn't mattered so far. For sheep I prefer the 125 Nosler Partition or 120 TSX, not so much for sheep but in case I run into a grizz.

I also use an original 22" Ruger Dog-leg bolt in 6.5. This allows the bullets to be loaded out to 2.925 or 1/10th of an inch further than the Rem. I favour 140 Rem CL's or 140 Nosler Partitions in this rifle at around 3000fps. H4831 does the trick. This rifle takes me into Moose territory though the 358 Norma gets the nod usually. I have experimented with 160 RN's but the standard designs shed cores pretty consistently. I think they are made for slower velocities. 140 has been a much better heavy bullet weight. The 140 Corelockt has been outstanding, seems to work as well as the Partition!

This little caliber is very similar to a 270 but in a nice pocket size action. Excellent cartridge. Deep seating of bullets loses you about 25fps with such thin bullets. Not a big deal. The slightly greater than 270 case capacity gains you that velocity and maybe a bit more. I do like 22" of barrel better than 20" though. Anything that a 270 can do the 6,5 Rem can do as well and that's pretty good company to keep.

I don't know if they still make them or not but Norma used to have a 156gr spitzer, 6.5 bullet.

I think the Norma bullet was one of their steel clad round noses. The same construction was used in their 358 Norma bullet. The core would separate on these if you looked at it crossly, and the jacket would splinter.

The 140's generally seem to be built for faster speeds and hold onto their velocity better.

Lapua makes a heavy bonded bullet I think.

I have a savage 26" shaw barrel 6.5 rem mag and a Remington
sendero 26" 264 win mag.
The little 6.5 will stay right beside the 264 until you get over the 140 grain bullets. And it will beat the 6.5x284 & the 6.5-06 too.
A 85 gr out of the 6.5 at 3613 fps and the 100 gr at 3475 fps is no slotch.
I'm building a 30" 264 now and the 100's will be at 3934 fps. 85's at 4117 fps.

Oldbikewrench , If I could I like to beg a favor. Would you let me know the next time they have the gunshow in Crawford. Haven't seen a flyier on it in sometime, and that's always been a good one to go have a look see.

 Thanks.
