I'm looking at buying a Sauer 202 Classic XT in 30-06 with a 24" barrel.  It is offered in a blued solid outside barrel diameter of 16mm or 19mm.  Which one should I  get and why?

What do you plan to do with it, bench or carry?

Being old and lazy, I'd go light. Still and all, the heavy looks better in my MT head, if cosmetics carry much weight with you. Another thing you might like to consider is how it balances for you.

Frankly, this is a personal choice, not much to be gained from my opinion.

For carry and general shooting, I'd go with the lighter barrel.  However, depending on where you're going to be carrying the device (heavy brush or mountain area) one might elect for a 'faster handling' rifle.

So the heavier barrel bobbed a bit might be the same over all weight, have a somewhat stiffer (and potentially more accurate) barrel and be shorter and easier to handle in brush or other close quarters.

A 24" barrel in .30-06 will shoot faster than a 20" barrel, but probably not enough to matter to a game animal under 200 yards or so.

However, ultimately, you're going to have decide and live with it.  So what's important?  Utility or long range reach or looks?  Take your pick.
