I've wanted a lever 30-30 since I was a little kid watching westerns with my dad. Well, I finally got my rifle. This 336A was on sale at Dick's, and I got the sling from Midway. The rifle itself was ok, but when I installed the sling this morning it became so much more. One day I'll replace the factory cheapo stock with a custom cowboy type, but right now it's...perfect. Think I might sleep with it tonight. The gf is away so she won't mind...

Yeah, I want to try cast bullets. I've heard there can be an issue with the micro groove rifling, but I'll give it a shot anyway. Planning to try some .311 and .309 gas checked, see what works. What powders are good for this?

It just won't feel right unless there's smoke and hot lead coming out when I shoot it.

Well if your going to sleep with that rifle I would suggest that you leave the front site hood on. I took mine off of my 1895SS and it cut my forehead when I rolled over on it:lol::lol:

Yep you gotta love those lever guns! And your looks great, congratulations!

good powders ... ummm u mean there's a bad one ? lolz well black powder usually works lolz and has some smoke tho i found that it seems to smoke less in cartridges than in muzzle loaders, i use alot of unique and quite a bit imr4759, rx7 is another good one , nowadays xmp5744 is decent as well and while i havent tried trailboss my understanding is that it would suffice,i ended up sizing mine to .308,lite loads with the 30 carbine 110-120gr type bullet works great ( more like shooting a air rifle lolz )look at hodgdon's cowboy action long range rifle loads for good idea's, it seems i recall lyman suggesting that cast boolits seem to work best in these micro grooved barrels when kept around 1600 fps or less, tho with a gas checked lino i had decent results pushin them a bit faster than that but by using slower powders than unique or red dot (or black )take a gander over at castboolits and search , there's also a marlin forum
http://www.marlinowners.com/forums/index.php/topic,43865.0.html
umm u have to be a member there tho to search

I shot her today on the range, it was everything I hoped for. It shoots flatter than I expected even with the 170gr. I only went to 100 yards though. Accuracy off-hand was impressive. Next step, I see some vibrant shiny copper fouling in the barrel. Time to break out the Hoppe's bench rest...

I've seen Unique mentioned quite a bit for this so I think that's what I'll go with. As I understand it, 30-30 was not originally a BP cartridge, but it works pretty well? I would need 2F right?

My oldest son finally got another and loves it. He hunts w/o glass and loads his own. His rear sight got lost so he built one from a 22 and "V'd" it out a bit more. wc

unique does work ,in fact it works in so many rounds lolz ,the 30-30 was in a transition period when smokeless( called bulk back then) was in it's infancy , i had a antique box of the original loads but some one convinced me that they had a strong desire to own them , they looked pretty cool "metal patched" lolz and the primers ..let's just say i hadnt seen tthem like that before but i never took one apart to see what was in it ,it was indeed the first american commercially loaded smokeless round ( according to c.o.w. and other historians) and while it used the old black powder style of naming cartridges it used to be reloaded alot back in the day with black and black does make it thump ! ( try it sometime lolz ) 2f or 3f or even pyrocrud if u wish or triple 7 with all three just make sure that there i no case air space left and that it is packed a lil bit (this is where i cringe with compressed loads lolz smokeless doesnt even worry me if it's not major compressed), for alot of recipes where black is called for i use 3f but upon occasion i do use 2f for the larger rounds and the big front stuffers but i usually have more 3f on hand than 2 f lolz and while triple 7 is supposed to be water wash i still use soapy water out of habit and then flush with as hot of water as i can stand

Nice lloking rifle, to take full advantage of the MicroGoove rifling you need to size your bullets to .311, they will shoot straight and true for you.

She's a beauty.

I've had a 336 for 10 years or so and it's just dang fun to shoot. It moved up to my deer rifle last year.

Enjoy!

You can shoot cast very successfully in the Microgrove barrel, but BP won't work very well. Fouling will build up very qucikly in the small bore, and the shallow groves won't hold much. You might have some success if you wipe after every shot, which is a PITA.

Thanks for all the comments guys. I saw an ad for a company that does stock covers, think I'm going to order a custom cover. They have some beautiful work posted on their webpage.

Oh, and a question for those that do wood working. The pressed checking on the stock is somewhat rough, it snags lint from cleaning cloths and such. What would be a good way to smooth that out?

Beautiful rifle! The 336 is going to be my next rifle too, except in .35 Remington. Probably 6 one way and 1/2 dozen the other, but somehow I got the .35 stuck in my brain (there's so much room in there for stuff to get stuck in).

Yes, I think wheezengeezer's right, steel wool (start with 000 or 0000) or a fine gray nylon pad should help knock the edges off the checkering.

Thank you Charley, you beat me too it. The problem stems from the 1in 12" to 1 in 10" twist rate in 30-30 barrels. Also, Winchester never called it the 30-30. They called it the .30 W.C.F for Winchester Center Fire. Marlin, not wanting to use the Winchester name used the black powder type label 30-30. Apparently others did too so Winchester finally went along with it.

IIRC, the first commercial smokeless powder round was the 30-40 Krag and the 30-30 was the first commercial "SPORTING" round.

Regarding black powder in the 30-30, while you can use it, the fast 1 in 12" twist in the Winchester rifles would foul out losing accuracy in two or three rounds. Then Winchester brought out the .32 Win. Spl. with the same 1 in 16" twist used in the 32-40 cartridge. The twist was just fast enough that smokeless loads with 170 gr. bullets would shoot well enough but those who preferred black powder could use it instead and for all practical purposes have a bottlenecked 32-40. FWIW, those .32 Win. Spl. are supposed to shoot very nicely with cast bullets. I'll find out one I get a mold and lube/sizer dies for mine.

I'm not sure what the twist rate is in the current Marlins, but I think it might be 1 in 10" which would be even worse than the 1 in 12" if using black powder.

I knocked the edged off the checking, then re-stained it a little. Finally I applied a couple coats of Birchwood Casey gun stock wax. I'm very happy with the results, probably won't even replace the stock now.

I haven't handled a 336 recently and, as I mentioned, I'm sure a 336 in .35Rem will be my next. So..... is the stock really that "cheap" that I too might want to replace it right away? It looks fine in your picture above. In fact, very nice work. It doesn;t even look as if it's been altered.

Also, I have an 1894 .44Mag. It's about 30 years old, but the walnut stock on it is very nice. I'd hate to think Marlin started using low-grade materials on these venerable rifles.....
