Is a 721 Remington a good action for building a new rifle on?

yes.

it is mostly a remington 700, and most 700 parts will interchange easily (like the trigger).

the bolt, safety, trigger, and floorplate are the primary differences between it and a 700. replace the trigger w/ a 700 (or one for a 700), replace/remove the floorplate, and you will have a rem 700 w/ a better feeling bolt.

great gun to build from, and as of now, still pretty inexpensive. my last one (from cabela's of all places) i got for $125...

oops... i need to add that eventually the extractor will wear out (probably not for many years, though), and you will want to go ahead and have a 'smith convert to sako extraction vice searching for a factory piece.

It would be a very good action to blueprint and build a custom rifle on.

Well, I sent off a Rem 721 to Dan Pedersen of Classic Barrel & Gunworks of Prescott, AZ for a rebore/rechamber to a 338/06.  The original caliber was a 30-06.  Makes for a very nice custom cartridge and custom rifle.  Lets see if I can find a pic.

TG,

The stock is not inletted for the original floorplate but for a Rem 700 ADL triggerguard.  That is an aluminum guard that I believe I obtained from either Midway or Brownell's...can't remember which!  I will use either the aluminum blackener or I will try and locate a blued steel ADL guard.

You will notice that the stock has a little more drop at heel than many of the modern stocks...so I will go with either a Williams peep-site or obtain some low Burris Signature rings to mount a steel Weaver K3 w/post & crosshair scope.  Have to wait and see...........I have not unpacked a lot of stuff since my move from Hondo to Llano county, TX yet...still trying to get organized(?)...if thats possible.  Been playing pick-up truck and range cube cowboy at my cousin's ranch.  He just had heart by-pass surgery and not able to do much as yet.  But I am having all sorts of fun so no big deal........guns unfortunately have to be put on the "back burner" so to speak.

Ol' John

I understand completely and hope his heath problems will be ok John.
Very interesting stock John.Where did you get the wood for it?I will be down near you in late January or early February on a ranch in Bend Between Cherokee and Lampassas. Its a 2 deer managment hunt and feral hogs.I intend to use my 6mm for at least one or maybe both of the deer with a Sierra 85gr HPBT Gameking.I have yet to use it on an animal but I feel confident it will do the deed and is extremely accurate. It is very heavy though with a benchrest stock which limits me seriously to shooting from a good rest out of a blind.Have you seen a pic of mine?
I like your rifle John.Id say put that Weaver on it.It`ll be a classy rifle with a classice scope.Oughta knock them hill country bucks down like a hammer too...

TG,

I purchased the stock from Great American Gunstocks.  Your hunt near Lampasas should be most enjoyable.  Try to get some little piggies for BBQ....ummmm!

The 338/06 is for bigger critters than deer.........like feral wild cattle/bulls.  Some of these critters tear up pens, refuse to load and mainly try to stomp you if you get in the pen with them.  Getting too old to take chances any more.  Ain't nothing worse in my estimation than a 1000-1200lb bull or cow with the intent of getting you.  But thats another story for another day.

My cousin came thru the quad-bypass surgery A-OK.  He is fast on the mend.  Went down today and checked the windmill in the south pasture and put out a 100# of range cubes for the cattle.  Like I said.....he is mending fast.

I've got one in 30-06 and a 722 in 222 both are extremly accurate.  I was thinking about making the 721 into a 338-06 as well let me know how it works out.

I have a 6.5x55 Ackley Improved built on a 721 Action. It sports a Lothar-Walther barrel with a 1-8" twist and sits in a Pepper laminate 700 LSS stock. It also has had the trigger replaced with a worked over 700 unit. This is a happy combination, and shoots the 140 Partition into ½ moa right out to 500 yards, the farthest I have shot it so far. Regards, Eagleye.

According to remingtons website this must have been a rebarrel because they never produced a 6mm in either the 721 or722 unless 244rem is the samething as 6mm rem if yes then it was a 722.

721 were most common in 3006 270 300hh then 264 win mag and the lst 2 years they made a 280 which would be a rare find I imagine.  My pops had three at one point not knowing of the 280 thought he was one from the set he sold the 06 then 6 mos later found a real nice 264 oh well.

I doubt you are but could you be mistaking it for a 788 if so they are some good shooting guns and when I find one I can buy right I will not hesitate

This was a custom built rifle my father in law had, with a heavy 24 inch barrel and a brake in a custom walnut benchrest stock. It is a 721 action for certain. He traded it to me for a tricked out 25-06 the year before he died.It is stamped Remington 721 on the action..Its a sweet shooter with 85 grain Sierra HP Gamekings and the 80 grain SP bullet.
A couple of pics of this rifle(btw, the guy who posted this thread,is my son..He has a Ruger  in 243 Win and has been eyeing my 6mm since he watched it shoot on our backyard 100 yard range)

The 6MM Remington and the .244 are the same cartridge. The .244 wouldn't handle the heavier 100 grain 6MM bullets with a twist of 1 in 12, so Remington changed the twist to 1 in 9 inches and renamed the cartridge the 6MM.
