Went out to my smiths shop today to give him a little more of my hard earned cash, and took the .270 with me. After drooling over some of his customs I went on out to the woods to try again to get this expensive featherweight to shoot !. I only had 1 load and only 17 rounds, of it but I decided to try it any way. Since last weekend I had free floated the barrel and was expectin better things.
I put a target on a tall stump at 96 yards and fired 3 rounds. I walked up and there was a jaged hole about 2 inches right about where I wanted it. The bark from the stump had ripped it up quite a bit. But it was promising. I fired another group with similar results.
I found a piece of cardbord and stock three red dot stickers on it a fired another 3. This was much better and the 3 holes wee about a perfect inch. The second group was 1.25. and a 3rd was .75. I had 2 more rounds to shoot and aimed at the .75 inch dot. Tha 2 extra holes made for a 5 shot group at just under 1.25 inches.
I hope for better, but an avarage of an inch ain't to bad for a featherweight, I was shooting off sand bags from the hood of my truck, and the load was a 130 grain Hornady, and i think H-4831. It was an old box and the notes were not with it. It might have been H414 but I will load some more with both and try the Nosler B=tip and barnes tripple shock. I think the free floating was the answer. I am confident by deer season she will be ready to go !...tj3006

Try 55 gr of IMR 4350 with the Hornady 130 gr FB, my hunting buddy has a factory wood stock Remington ADL in 270 that will put this load into 1/2 group . I haven't tried this load in my Mod 70 Win. 270, but my Remington 700 i gave my son shot this load into 1/2 groups at 100 yards. It has been very accurate in a number of 270 over the last few years. or should i say since the early 70's.

I would not be at all suprised if IMR-4350 proved to be an excelent performer in my .270. I went to buy some today and they were all out. So I got some more H4831 instead. I also bought a box of 160 grain partitions. I plan to load 5 each with 60.5 grains of H-4831 , and a stiff charge of RL-22 and H-414. In about 3 weeks spring Bear season opens up, and I think the partition would be a great choice ! ...tj3006

TJ, sounds like your rifle is coming around to where you want it. But I've got a question about your intended load with the 160gr Partition. You say you're going to load it with 60.5gs of H4831. The Nosler manual shows a Maximum Charge of 54.5gs. Just curious if you made a misprint on your load or if you're really going to use that much powder? Or am I missing something here. Is it a 270 Win or 270 WSM.

Nice catch gunrunner !
I type like a truck driver ! (wait I am a truck driver) I am using the 130 grain partition. That 160 is probably a good bullet but if I have a 7 mag if I want to go that heavy. 60.5 is the load I am using with the 130 gr. ...tj3006

TJ,if you don`t get the accuracy you want try AA3100.I got it to handle a 130 gr Sierra SP with 56 grains of it.I played it higher but accuracy began to fall off after that in my rifle.I started using it after H4831,IMR4831 and 4350 didn`t fill the bill in my 22 inch barreled Remington..

I'm glad to hear that you're not out to blow your rifle and yourself up with the misprinted load.
In my own 270 I've been playing with the Sierra 140gr GameKing and 57.5gs of H4831SC. Not a hot load by any means, and the accuracy has been very good so far. This is just a load for Blacktails, and as you know, you don't need much to knock one over.
I haven't tried the Partition bullet yet, but plan to before next deer season. Not so much for deer, but the Black bears in the area are of some concern while out in the forest. Never had any problems with them, but sure have seen a lot of scat and tracks, and a couple sightings. Better to be prepared if a problem arises and I have to shoot. Might be the bullet to go with for wild pigs too. I've still got a pig tag sitting in my desk and it needs to be filled.
Looking foreward to more reports on your rifle.

tj,
all this 270 talk between you and fiftydriver are killing me!
I'm wanting to re-work my 270 Model 70 FWT soon. H-4831 and 130 gr. noslers partitions worked well on paper and in the field. Still hoping to get better accuracy though.
As it stands, I'm gonna glass bed the action after a practice run on another rifle of mine.
Good luck, maybe I can bum a favorite recipe once everything is finished with my 270 tinkering

I am just about ready to shoot the .270 this weekend,
I am going to shoot 5 shot groups with 4 130 grain bullets and 2 different powders. I would not be surprised is they all shoot reasonably well...tj3006

You need to try the 130 gr Hornady Interbond, my 270 loves them with Rel 22.

Did not get to shoot this weekend damnit !
But I guess thats all right. Had a very pinfull but not dangerous medical problem, and I don't go shooting on Vicoden. But at least I can load up a few more loads to try. I think i will try the 130 grain partition with RL-22. The first time I tried rl 22 my results were dismal. But since then I free floated the barrel, and I think now the RL-22 might be great ! Beal likes the horady interbond and I bet it would do well But I got about 4 -130 grain bullets to try allready. My hope is to get either the partition or the Barnes tripple shock to beat MOA , and at least 3000 fps. Either bullet will be about as good a game killer as any 270 load. I know 3000 seems slow for a 270 but the boone and crocket reticle is calibrated for 3050 fps so as far as I am cocearned 50 feet one way or the other should not matter. ...tj3006
