I once owned a marlin 1865 Guide gun.
I solf it to buy a very nice scope for my .270. I rather enjoyed shooting the marlin , but ! I discoverd a disturbing situation with it. The short but stock with the excelent recoil pad placed my right thumb right uynder and up against my nose !
This was no problem with 300 grain bullets, or with 350s as long as I did not aproach maximum power levels, But ! When I did aproch the the hot stuff, The recoil caused my right thumb to bash hell out of my nose. NO FUN ANYMORE !
I have a plan for a cure !
1st I have to buy a new marlin, The easiest fix would be to buy the standard version with the 22 inch barrel and the longer but stock. I may go that rout but I probably would replace the thin factory recoil pad. but a more creative Idea is , a set of Quick detach basses and rings from warne. I could shoot the factory sights with 300 grain bullets and lighter loads , and atach a pre zeroed 2.5 powwer scope for the really hot stuff ! I think this would be fun for sure and a very effective combo for hunting any anmimal on eart inside 200 yards. Sound like fun top you ? ...tj3006

If i was going to buy, it would be the New 450 Marlin , in factory it should out perform the the 45-70 . I would prefer the 22 inch barrel just to cut down on muzzle blast.

I just put a 2.5x Simmons intermediate eye relief shotgun scope on my Handi-Rifle, by cutting another notch in the Weaver rail, I was able to mount the scope far enough forward to clear the hammer. The focal length of the scope is 5.5-6".
I do not know if the Marlin is drilled and tapped for a Weaver rail, but it likely is.
You might check this out, the rail is easy to notch where you need it.

The new "Blue Press" Dillon Catalog lists a dandy of a "scout scope" set up by XS Sight Systems. It's a "picatinny rail" set up that mounts useing the dovetail slot for the factory rear sight, and the front 2 scope base mounting screws on the foward part of the reciever. You then can mount a long eye relief scope of your choice anywhere along the rail useing any style of Weaver Mount you wish. I've got a Guide Gun and I don't intend to scope it, but if I did this would be the set up I'd use. It looks strong, plus it just seems to "fit", that style of gun better. billt

I don't particulay care for the scout type scope set up. Not that it does not work but I like the Idea of the Quick detach mounts with say a 2.5 power. I wonder if the picatiny might block the use of the front site. Also i don't want the 450 marlin. Again it works but I seldom shoot factory ammo and with the 45/70 I could pick up a box of factory ammo if I wanted to take a frend to shoot who is more recol sensitive than I...tj3006

You could still fit any Weaver Style quick detach mounts with the XS System. A 2.5X would be just about perfect with a scout set up. Nice quick target acquisition. It's up to you, but I like the "centered" scope look with a short fast handleing lever gun like the Marlin Guide Gun in .45-70. billt

I bought one of these rails for my son. He likes it. I bought the Ghost Ring sight set and I love it. It really is useable to 100 yards easily. I haven't tested it on longer ranges-my range is only 100 yards.
I have 2 Marlin 1895's: stainless and blued. Neither are ported. I just plain wanted the Guide Gun ($520.00), but the other followed me home from the gun show after a swap of a Taurus PT-140 and $20.00. It even had a 4x12x40 scope! I like the longer length of the blued, and I truely lust after the Cowboy version and it's 9+1 capacity.
I like the concept of the shotgun scope, I never even thought about it. I use and old Weaver 4 power fixed on my blue 1895. Recoil is a problem with the heavier loads. I also have a 1879 Trapdoor and a Siamese mauser in 45-70. I load nickle cases with soft loads, lead and jacked flat points for the Marlins, and Barnes spitzers in the Siamese (2450 fps 400 gr Original).
I truely love the big boomers, but they can get painfull. My son had a great ideal. I bought a gell bicycle seat cover from Wal-Mart for $10.00 and boy does it help at the bench. Recoil on the Siamese was brutal, but the gell seat lets me shoot 40 rounds at a sitting. Try it, you'll like it.

A gel pad bycycle seat ?
Well I just might have to take a peek at one of those. I would not need one for a guide gun as they come with a good pad. The xtandard model how ever could stand a little help. And If i were the ever buy a ruger #! it makes sence there too ! I also like the cowboy rifle. I would love it with a tang peep site for plinking but with no pad at all it would probably rip right through the gel pad were I to load up for Elk hunting.. I will look into shot gun scopes but i plan for a lower power, if I scope at all and I think i would get better eye relief ...tj3006

I mentioned the bike seat because it really does work. I haven't tried a PAST shooting pad, but I bet it is nearly the same. If you are developing a load for use in a 1895 Marlin, or any other gun that has some kick, get something to help. Shooting from a bench is rough, and even the lighter loads can make you develop a flinch if you shoot enough. The extra pad helps and I even use it on 30-30 loads, as well as all guns without a recoil pad.
If your Guide Gun don't hurt, then you ain't doing it right. You must be using factory loads or softballs. Load that rascal up to level two and make your eyes dance and they guys next to you move.
The 300 grain lead Meister from Midway are nice. You can load to level 2 and get great accuracy. Level 1 is fun and good to hunt with, but you will have trouble hitting past 100-150 yards. The level 2 is a serious 200 yard load. The 400 grain level 2 is on the edge of brutal in the light Guide Gun. I have a Limb Saver on mine. I've tried up to 500 grain loads, but the Guide Gun is better suited to lighter bullets and shorter ranges.
I will eventually get the Cowboy 1895 I like the look of it, the added weight, extra barrel length and the 9+1 capacity. What's not to love? I will grind the stock flat and put on a Limb Saver recoil pad just because I truely love my damaged right shoulder!
My son is stationed in Alaska at Fairbanks (Ft. Wainright) and he plans to take a brown bear next year. I will be there with a 45-70 and level 2 400 grain loads as a back up, hopefully in a Cowboy 1895.

Mr rat.
i got my mrlin but it is not guide gun. It is a standard 1895. But it hs the uide gu recoil pad. I will be loading up for it. But I won't be shooting hotloads of any bench. I mounteed a 1X4 VX2 leupold on her in Qick detach mounts. I will be ordering a set of replcement sights for it tommorow. I think a Marbles semi buckhorn with the whit diamond and a whit dot front post though i bet i do most of my shooting with he scope. I like the350 grain Hornady flat base for elk and any onld 300 grain hollow point for deer...tj3006
