I posted about this on the lever page but there is not much action over there ! I been looking at the marlin 1895 45/70s. I once had a guide gun so chamberd, and I am thinking of getting into that cartridge again.
I sold the guide gun beacuse when I held it to my shoulder the stock length placed my thumb so close to my nose that every time I fired a real hot load with a bullet 350 grains or bigger I basicly punched myself in the nose.
But I enjoyed shooting it alot and am thinking of doing one of 2 things. 1 the easy one is to get the standard 22 inch version and put a begger pad on it. It has a longer pull and should keep my long,(grandma jones was jewish) nose out of the way, or , Get another guide gun and for 300 grain loads shoot as is, but buy a set of Quick detach mounts and a little 2.5 power fixed scope for the hot ones. If I get standard hight rings it should raise my head up above the bore by an inch and a half or so making that nose busting thing a smaller probem. what do think guys ? ...tj3006 PS of corse a nose job is an option but after looking at michal jacsons mug so much latley I don't want to do any thing he does next thing you know i will be buying single gloves and dancing on limmo's...tj3006

TJ, I don't care all that much for a scope on a lever gun. I've had a scope on my M1894 at times but it never feels comfortable when shooting it. Everyone's different though and it might not bother you that much. And you say you'll just have it on for the heavy loads. I imagine the guide gun is pretty easy to pack around the woods.
I do like the looks of the standard rifle with pistol grip. And if you can replace the recoil pad with the type thats on the guide gun it might be very comfortable. Would the extra 3&1/2" barrel get you a decent gain in velocity with a 45/70?
Hmmmmm, I'm not sure which rifle I'd go with. But don't get the nose job and don't wear pajamas and sandals while shooting either one.

I don't know about the velocity barrel length thing. its a good question though. You use prety hot powders with the 45/70 som barrel lenght might not be so important. I also see nosler makes a 300 grain partition, for the 45/70. Yhat might let me stay with a 300 grain for all amy shooting. The recoil jumps sharply when shooting the 350s. I think at this time , I will wait till next week and go to the gun show. I might be able to find an older one with out the cross bolt safty...tj3006

I've got the Stainless and blue version, neither ported. I have finished working up loads for my Siamese Mauser, and the Marlins are next. I like the Barnes Bullets. I've got all from 250 gr to 450 gr on my bench. I also have 300, 350 and 400 grain lead to try. I will limit the lead loads to fun (Trapdoor) levels, the jacketed loads for power and accuracy. I'll let you know how it turns out. I'll shoot both over the Crony and compaire velocity. I'll probably even take the Siamese to show longer barrel differences.
I load spitzer 30-30 rounds for 2 bolt action Savages. The 340 has a 20 inch tube and the 840 has a 18 incher. I have shot the same loads out of both and have found no real differences. Sometimes shorter is faster. Don't know why. Just is.
I saw someone here suggest a shotgun scope for longer eye relief. I will be trying that. My brother used to hunt deer witha 20 ga pump with a scope. I may try to snag his for testing. With heavy loads on the 1895SS, ths scope hits my glasses every time. Just a little kiss, but enough to let my know what could happen. That's witha 4 power fixed, and they have a little longer eye relief than variables.
