This rifle is quickly becoming one of my favorites.I hear a lot of bashing of Savage firearms but if they all perform like this little heavy barreled 308 Win,I HAVE NO COMPLAINTS.Most of you guys have seen this pic. This is after a little stock finishing job.

This is how it looked befor its stock transformation.Definately a very ugly rifle, but very effective.Sadly I missed the biggest buck I would have taken to date with this rifle last year. That was my fault, poor range estimation and opting for a heart shot.Definately not the rifle. It has harvested several nice bucks and feral hogs along with other nuisances..;)

The job you did on the stock really makes it look like a different rifle.   But I bet it works as good as always on those yotes.    Nice.

Savage is a GREAT rifle. I sold one and bought a win 70 stealth. Not sure yet if it was a good idea..

I agree!

I really like that stock paint job you did handload.

I did something similar with a crappy Ramline, it used to look like this:

I just had to paint it which improved it tremendously I think.

Much better Mountaineer.            That baby looks ready for some desert warfare, with some coyotes on the receiving end.

I've got a Savage 116 in .30-06, and that is one fine shooting gun. My only regeret, I've onlyt shot paper with it. It has been on several hunts, but nothing has ever presented itself that I wanted to pull the trigger on with it. I hope that changes this fall.

How did I hide the original checkering?

LOL...I wouldn't exactly call that plastic mesh pattern checkering but I know what ya mean.  I simply taped off the barrel channel and the innards of the stock then used some flat sand colored spray paint as the base color, took 2-3 coats, then striped with brown spray paint and then hand-painted the black.  Easy to do and fun.  The multiple coats hid the checkering.
