I have used a lot of barrels over the years: Shilen, Douglas, Pac-Nor, Lilja, Lothar-Walther, Krieger, Smith, (Canadian) Hart, Gaillard,(Canadian) McMillan, and probably a couple of others I don't remember. Never had a "bad" custom barrel, , but had a couple of poor smithing jobs that had to be redone to bring out the potential. Right now I have a couple of Pac-Nors, a Gaillard, a Douglas, a Lothar Walther and a brand new Krieger. I think if I had to make a choice of one, Krieger would get the nod. My present smith, who is an excellent accuracy rifle builder, tells me that the Kriegers are very consistent as far as bore and groove diameters go, more so than many other custom maker's Barrels. I shoot 1000 yards, so to place, I need a rifle that will maintain .4 moa or better right out there. THen all I have to do is my part!! Regards, Eagleye

Man o Man am I glad I found this thread (and the forum in general). Best thread I read on ANY board in a long time.

I got a bud who apprenticed for about 15 years with a grizzled old gunsmith. We worked a deal for him to build a .308 turnbolt for me in trade for my Israeli heavy barrel FAL. He "made" me choose a Shilen 1:12, # 5 contour. It is going on a NIB Santa Barbara action. This will be my first custom built rifle. Unless you count the FrankenFal I built - ongoing build . But that is a battle rifle. Big Diff'. Big difference in my gunsmithing skills and a REAL riflesmith too. My FrankenFAL sports a US made barrel, (Green Mountain) in .308. So far it shoots better than an Imbel tube or a Brit tube. But again, this is a battle rifle.

I will hope to post up my results with the Shilen. Should be a fun new experience for me. Especially with all the knowledge on this board to draw from.
