I am looking to buy me a 1886 Winchester or Browning in 45-70. I called all the local sporting goods store and no one has one. I guess i will go to the next gunshow and try to find one. Has anyone tried this big bore lever gun? I can get a Marlin in 45-70, but have no interest in the Marlin. I will keep looking until i find the Winchester or Browning. I believe this would be the best stopping rifle i can buy in a lever gun, that is with the right load and bullet.

Bea;
A local pawn shop has a '71 in .348, but he is really high on all , even his junker clunkers.

The 1886 winchesters are cool as anythng. They are I am sur you know highly collectable. The browning coppy is also a great rifle and while not as expensive as the real winnies they aint cheap. Winchester has a reissue on the market . A lighweight takedown version. They are not a true coppy as they have a cross bolt saftey. The last one I saw was 1100.00, So you might as well get the real thing, Drinks mentions the model 71 348. That is another great choice if you find one of them in either browning orwinchester look it over that is real power house too !
If you don't have that kind of money take another look at the marlin. Not as cool of corse but just as effective and fun...tj3006

I am well aware of what they cost and i have the money and will hunt for the Browning 1886 with the full length magazine. I could have purchased the Marlin any time but want the Browning or Win copy with the full magazine. I don't really want the light weight copy with the halve mag. I will find what i want some day if i keep looking. Thanks for the reply.

I had one for awhile. It would shooot better than 3" groups at 100 yds with either 350 or 405 gr bullets. I killed two elk with it, and it did put them down with authority, although the distance was only 25 yds max.
I carved a new stock for it to save the original. Needless to say the new stock had a recoil pad on it. Thye do come bak at you prety hard.
It was to heavy for me to lug around, 13#'s fully loaded. I couldn't put enough weight on the off side of my saddle to keep everything even.
High quality firearm though

Sounds like a good elk killer if you don't mind packing it around the mountain. I don't have a 45-70 and would like to own a 1886 just to play with.

I like the Winchester, as a display piece, but prefer the Marlin for carry, and use. The Winchester is just too damned purty, and expensive, to mess it up by field use, IMO. Now, I have not owned either, but have handled them, and will be buying the marlin 1895 Cowboy very soon. I would like to own a Winchester 1886, but can't bring myself to part with the number of greenbacks required to bring her home.
