I havent had a chance to look at accuracy yet but I do have a load that I will stick with if it is accurate enough. .257 STW, Fed 215 primer, Nosler Ballistic Tip 100 grain, 90 grains (compressed load) of Retumbo. All of this has equaled 3876 f.p.s. I think that is as good as it is going to get from a 26" barrel. I am going to try to work on accuracy today or next week, depending on the weather. It is bad windy today...

Sounds like you've found a winner. Good luck with your accuracy tests. Pat

Thanks Force, I worked up a load 26.5 grains of  varget cci 400 primers and 55 grain james calhoon bullets. Very accurate good velocity. Will let you know how they perform on varmits. Might even have some test results by the end of the day.  Thanks again Pat.

Before I switched to the 75 gr. A-Max in my .223, I used the Calhoon 37 gr. double hollow points exclusively for my close range varminting.  Extremely accurate and explosive on little critters.  I loved the load and still take it out on occasion when a close range assault is in order.

Calhoon comes down to the two gun shows in GF every year.  Nice guy.  Have toyed with the idea of getting into one of his .19 cal. cartridges but don't really like the idea of owning a round who's bullet supply is filled by one, single manufacturer.  Not that he's ever going out of business, but it's a risk I just haven't taken yet.  May take the plunge, in time.  But honestly, I see a .204 purchase for an extreme small cal. varminter before it.  We'll see, though.

Good luck with the 55 gr. Calhoons.  >>  klallen

Thanks, I have shot his bullets before just never out of my 223. They work good in the 22-250 and the swift, but you have to be careful and keep them under 3600 fps or he says that they might come apart. Have some of his 30 grain doulbe hollow points, that i loaded for a hornet. Just getting ready to go try them out. Will let you guys Know more later. Pat

FRM, If you are getting over 3800 fps w/100 gr. in that cartrige, I'd be happy . I bet a 120 gr. with Retumbo would be a good load too. I'm betting you will get better accuracy with max loads out of H-1000 but probably you velocity will drop. Mine did about 150 fps. less with max loads compared to Retumbo. H4831 was about the same as H-1000 velocity wise and Rel 25 was about the same as Retumbo but the latter had better accuracy with max loads. Don't know why I'm telling you all this. Was just looking at my notes while posting.

Well, I just went out to do a little accuracy testing and it sucked. I am going to have to do something to get them better. I was shooting at about 150 yards and they were very inconsistant. I will probably have to slow them down a little. I sighted it in so I wouldnt shoot my chrony with 88 or 89 grains I think. When I first started testing the first shot hit a bullseye the size of a dime. It was only about 40 yards though. I backed it up to 150 and they were all very high. Back to the drawing board I guess...

Were those shells just hitting high, Or did they not group at all for you?

Well I didnt have the best rest in the world but all the long shots were high. Some of them were just farther off, left or right, than others. I was hoping they would be good where they were. I will try some at 89 grains and see how they group. I will make myself get a better rest too. Just to see, I shot a tree at about 75 yards and it shot less high and about 3 or 4 inches left.

IF your rest was not steady i would try that first, If you can work on the human error part that is where i would start. You know more about how steady you were but if there was a chance it was you and you are happy with that velocity i would check into a better rest. Just my thoughts Pat.

Well I think that was a big part of it. I usually try to practice a while before hunting season to retrain myself to shoot better. I need to invest in a good shooting vise. Then I would be able to better test the load and not myself. Hell, I have been so anxious to try to get this thing going and with my lack of time lately I have been to impatient. It has been a little cold and windy this weekend too. It is supposed to be better next weekend. I hope.....

I was getting ready to get off and now you two get online...FRM, do you have a Harris bipod , gun vise or sand bags ? If not, before you go to Wy. I would get a bipod. They work okay on a bench too. A gun vise is better. Then you really know what your load is doing by taking the human factor out of it. They eaven have remote triggers that are a syringe with tube you push and the air pressure pushes your trigger. cool.

I agree with wyo on the bipod very useful in this part of the world especially with a long range weapon like you have. Dont remeber if i saw one on this gun in the picture or not.

LOL, This rifle has an unusual custom stock. It has a track with a groove in it. It takes a special bipod, or so I have been told. I havent been able to find one yet. I want one before I go for sure.

Good planning. Once you get her dialed in I know they will take elk at 500 yards with no problem. I have mine zeroed at 300 and with my scope that means all i have to do is hold the paralax on the spine and down they go. Pat
