Well here goes. 100 grain Nosler ballistic tip with a Fed 215 Magnum primer. I started with 86 grains of Retumbo and I got 3600+. I went to 88 grains and got 3700+. 89 grains was 3800 and the best so far. No signs of pressure. It started getting dark so I stopped for the day. I dont think I am going to be able to get over 90.5 or maybe 91 grains of Retumbo. I may have to go to H1000 to try to increase the pressure and get the velocity up. Do you get your best results when the barrel is completly cold? That has seemed to be my experience so far. I will try to get some more testing done by this weekend. More to follow....

Force, that's putting them out there. With 106 grs. of Retumbo and a 150 I was getting 3650 fps. Scared me. Pressure was fine and that was the listed max load but I never went over it because like I said they were blowing to hell on game (not Barnes). I was going to tell you, I tried H-1000 in my.300 , it's not as slow a burner as Retumbo and I got about 150 fps less out of it with a max load but to this day is the most accurate powder I have tried in it. I just didn't stick with it because of the fps loss. If I was going to punch paper though... I bet H-1000 with your 100 gr. would work well. maybe not as well with 120's. I don't know. Cold barrel for me too.

Well I may have to switch to a slightly faster powder. With the Retumbo, The case is going to be full to the rim at around 91 to 92 grains. I am going to load some at 90.5 or so and try them. They will be compressed loads for sure.

What velocities you looking to achieve, FRM?

If you're breaking 3800 fps with a 26" barrel, I'm not so sure you're haven't already gotten close to a top end load for the cartridge.  Simpson's published load for his .257 STW is 86.0 grs. of H1000 and a 100 gr. bullet yielding 3709 fps in a 26" barrel.  You have the benefit of Retumbo where Simpson didn't.  It will certainly give you a bit more in velocity as it's much more suited towards the large capacity, overbore rounds.  3800 - 3850 fps would seem like a reasonable increase expectation.  I do know a fella using the .257 STW for his lr rifle that is using 84.0 grs. of Ramshot Magnum with the 100 gr. Ballistic Tip and averaging 3950 fps     ...     from a 30" barrel.

Also, just an opinion.  You mentioned not having any pressure signs.  To me, in these larger capacity cartridges, if I'm seeing triple digit velocity increases with each minute 1 grain increase in powder charge, that's telling me I'm working at or darn close to top levels of pressure.  You mention you're not at a point where you're seeing anything visual on primer or case.  I've seen this in my assorted development projects as well, but looking at the large return you're getting with little powder increase, I'd guess that with the components you're choosing to use, you're real close to MAX.  Just something to consider.

You want much faster and still enjoy truely safe working conditions, I dare say a barrel change and a tight custom chamber will be what you'll want next.

Good luck with the continued development.  Be careful.  >>  klallen

You got me thinkin', You may be right. You may end up stuffing the case full with Retumbo and not getting to max load. I would measure the case head after firing. Klallen has a good point. I don't know what velocity you are trying to acheive but that's pretty damm fast to me. I would almost bet, almost... that you will do better with H-1000 . I bet your accuracy will be better too like I mentioned. Man, if you are crankin' them out that fast, I would work on a 120 gr. bullet load for big game or like I said , a 100 gr. Barnes would be good as far as retaining as much or more weight than the 120. All you would be giving up is muzzle energy and .....bullet drop past....500 yds. ? Had to say it ! Are you just checking fps or also for groups ? I was going to tell you, 105-106 grs. in my 300 RUM with a 150 gr. is compressed, I think 101 grs. with 180 is also.

I just wanted to see what was possible out of this rifle. I was letting the rifle cool for 25 to 30 minutes between load changes. The Ferguson guy that builds the .257 Hot Tamale claims 4060 out of his but I dont know at what length barrel that is. I will probably try a compressed load just to see what it will do and then stay at the 89 grains. Thanks for the advice klallen.

What do ya mean wyo those 100 grainers are the perfect pill in that gun youdont need anything heavier unless you shoot through a tree first:poke:. I use the h1000 in mine and the groups are outstanding, but with a 26 in barrel i am only comfortable at 3800 fps anything over that and pressure can be a problem. In my gun at least.

My rifle was custom built from a Rem Sendero.  I may look into a longer barrel. I sighted it in enough to keep from shooting my chrony. I havent had a chance to start getting it really dialed in. Once I decide on a load I will do that.

Wyo, Right now I am just studying the speed. Accuracy will be phase 2.

I know...I just said it to raz you  :troll:. I'm no authority on the 257. The only .25 cal I have is the TC 25 Bullberry I mentioned. I can only get 2900 fps out of it w/100 gr. . It's just a 30-30 case necked down. Hey ! Maybe I'll start stuffing that case w/H-1000 ???:lol:See FRM, Pat likes H-1000 too.

You should have a gun for every occasion that you might happen to be in. So keep filling up the safe. Just my thoughts. Pat
