i've been wanting a centerfire rifle for quite awhile now and i've thought about a tc contender rifle in .357 magnum cal..  i already reload that caliber and thought it might perform alright with a jacketed bullet and a good charge of 2400 in a .357 magnum case.  anyone have some info on what i'd get from a 20" barrel as far as ballistics..

I have a M94 Trapper with a 16" bbl. It's the "go everywhere" rifle here on the ranch. I get 2200fps with 110gr bullets, but better accuracy with 125gr hp's at about 2000. Good coyote medicine if you're in close and personal. They can be pushed a little hotter but case life is radically shortened.

I have a 357 mag in a lever action gun and anything past 75 yards i pass on, hits pretty good out to 50-75 yards though. I do not reload for this cartrige yet and i`m shooting 125 gr shelf ammo. Dont know if this helps or not.

If you are looking at a TC carbine, just go right to the 357 SM or as Remington called it, the Max. You can shoot 357 SM and 357 Mag in it.

The 357 SM gun will do 2150 fps with a 180 or 2090 with a 200 out of a 16 inch barrel while the 357 Mag will do 1750 with a 200. The SM gun is a real Bambi thumper.

I own two 357 SM rifles built on Martini Cadet actions and a 357 Marlin 94C lever gun. I am working loads for the Marlin, but I did reload for a Marlin before so I know the load I wil use already, a 200 Rem RN over a good bit of H-110. I just seat the bullet to clear a Smith cylinder and go to town. Oh, that is the little secret to a 357 lever gun load, just set the die to seat so the bullet clears a Smith cylinder and it will function 100% through the lever gun action.

rapier i had thought of the .357 max for a rifle round but i'd like to use the reloading stuff i already have here..   i'm wondering what a 150 gr. cast swc would do in the .357 max caliber from an 18-20" barrel...  i know it would lead the bore like a mother but it might be fun anyhow....

Cast does not = leading if done correctly. The secret is the alloy and lube once you get past the GC. I run a 200 RCBS FP at over 2,000 fps without leading. It shoots 1/2 inch groups.

You are stuck in the revolver mode. If you can push a 200 out of a 357 Mag case at 17-1800 why do you want to shoot a 150? It ain't a varmit or 500 yard caliber. This is a 50 yard gun, push for the energy not velocity.

A 357mag is 3 cartridges, one thing in a revolver, another thing in a single shot handgun and something entirely different in a rifle. If you want a rifle, load the cartridge for a rifle.

Most 357mag dies will work for the 357 SM. You just back the seater and bell dies out. :-)

i have several thousand 150 gr swc bullets i cast a few years ago so why i'm thinkin about useing that weight..the dies i use to reload with are the lee speed dies in .38 spl -.357 magnum cal so i dought if they will reload .357 max cases...    a .357 max t c contender rifle would be ideal though!

Ah, The old, I got it, story..... Hey, if ya got it shoot it. But watch out, you can push the 150 over 2100 fps in the SM and I doubt that you will get away without a silver bore lining. :-)

The secret to reloading the SM using Mag dies is the resizing die. If the die is long enough you just size as normal. The other two you just back out. It should take about two minutes to check out. The only difference is the length of the case.
