As a member of the Vietcong hunting club the AR-15 and M-79 is my choice.
The AR-15 I have the M-79 will take some doing.

The M79 is a grenade launcher A.K.A. "The Blooper" is a single-shot, shoulder-fired, break open grenade launcher which fires a 40 x46 mm grenade
Good for game up to water buffalo

We used to shoot those hand gernades (not hand tossed pineapples) from our M-1 and M-14's some years back. Now you say they have a special single shot rifle for the task......Ummmmmmm, I personally don't know if I would like carrying just a weapon, that only fired gernades one at a time. In between the fireworks, it was nice to know that my M-14 with "2" back to back 20 round clips, could take care of would be enemy out in front of us. Last edited on Sun Feb 17th, 2008 05:16 AM by

I may have dated myself the M79 was in service in 1968 at what year did you use the M14?

Are you positive it was an M14 you had there is a weight issue?

HiBall,
I responded to the switch barrel question in the Thumper thread.
On the M-79
The 79 lives on today as the 203. It is no longer a stand alone gun, it is as the old M-78 which was mounted below the barrel of the M-16. Now it is below the barrel of the M-4 with improved sights and munitions and known as an M-203. My son is a special tactics officer, a CRO. His favorite weapon is his 203. A 40mm grenade launcher is a thing of beauty in a firefight. Boop, whoom.... and folks no longer shoot back.
Oh, on the rifle grenade VS the grenade launcher, in qualification with the M-79, as I recall, the expert badge, required putting 4x4 grenades through a 3x3 window payne at 300 yards standing. In other words a good 79 man could put a hot rock in your back pocket out to 3-400 yards.

Rapier, I fired expert with those rifles but when it came to tossing those pineapples by hand or with the rifle, I certainly would never have made it passed the minor leagues.

Well I would ony use one rifle, who would need more? I choose the thompson encore pistol. Then I would get the barrel for the game I was hunting. You did not say multiple barrels.

Isn't owning only two rifles un-constitutional? Or is it just un-American?
Although to answer the question, since I don't see an elephant or another buffalo in my future, my .257 AI is good for everything from varmints to elk, and my .300 Wby would be good for everything else.

I'll stick with my 22lr and 30-06. Both have left a pretty wide path of destruction over the years.

My choice would actually be a rifle in .308 Win and a 12 gauge shotgun. That would pretty much covers most game in North America and anything on two legs. And since the ammunition is standard issue for both law enforcement and U.S. military, both would be readily available not matter what happens.

SHTF? In that senario I would take my AR and my SKS, so whom ever dropped a mag I could shoot it. If we are talking about the government saying I can only have two... I would load everything I had and we'd shoot it out in my front yard. Come and get em, bastards.

If it came to goverment trying to take my guns I would not shoot it out in my front yard I would be out my back door and into the woods with my M-1 Garand and fight em like a Rifleman from the woods shootting in rifleman cadance I can (and do ) hit targets from 400 yards away 10 hits in about 37 sec's(ya I do need to speed that up) (thats including the clip reload),ya know I really shoud see how fast I can hit with just 8 rounds and with just 16
Why would I fight them from my front yard thats a fight every jbt understands mind you I like that kind of sprit but a man as far back as April 19 1775 said a mans home is his castle he fought the redcoats from his home with a few others ,,they all died in that house
One hezakia Wyman of the woburn miltia fought from his horse would stop every so often and get off the horse shoot and another redcoat would fall dead he shot from his max range and out side off the redcoats range they called him Death on a pale white horse ,,,if you doubt me on the history look it up.

I suppose I should make my pick of rifle in my choosen 2 calibers and get on with things gents. My pick for big game would be my .338 Win mag model 70 Winchester for the big stuff! The other pick would be my wildcat .264/06, which would take care of any animal species from coyote up to cow elk I reckon. It too is in a model 70 Winchester Classic.
