Not accurate enough really, but a wonderful brush rifle. Try the new NRA Mini-14 with heavy barrel.

Years ago, the words "Mini14" and "Accuracy" were usually never put in the same sentence....

But I have to say, things have changed.  The new heavy barreled model seems to be holding its own.  I do not own one personally, but my buddy Allen does...it'll drive some tacks!  He is using a Nikon 3-9x optic, and anything within the 200yard mark normally ends up on the frying pan.

What optic are you using?

My Mini is my "always there" truck gun. I put one of those Hogue overmolded stocks on it and it rides with me wherever I go. (In my state, loaded rifles are OK in vehicles.) I don't expect much out of it in the accuracy department, but it is dead-reliable and never fails to feed and go bang whenever I want it to.

My mini 14 is one of the "new" ones (580) toped with a burris 3x9x40 and will shot a .25" 5 shot group at 100 yards. My handloads do better with the group being one tattered hole at 100 yards. Although my last trip to the range something went wrong at a 6" :confused:group with my new handload (BLC2 with hornady 68 gr. bthp) I moved the target back to 100 yards and it did not improve any:shameon:. At home I found that the rear scope mount was not clamped to the gun, fixed it and shot a tattered hole at 100:thumbs: yards at home. My next trip will include a 200 yard session.

Don't mind me, I just have sour grapes because finances made me sell my Mini-14, which was not a tack driver, but one HECK of a fun little gun.

I had a SS mini 14 which really wasn't that accurate so I sold it.I went thru DCM qualification for a Garand which is accurate and can reach out and touch things.

What exactly did Ruger do to improve the accuracy? I can't really humanely go past 75 yards on a fox and it chews the brass up so bad I cannot save it. Think mine is about 10 or 12 years old? They are sweet to carry in the woods.

Here's mine March 31st up by my cabin tracking a coyote my buddy missed. Yes...that is snow on the ground and it's 15" of the white stuff.

Nice snow!

Here's the best article I've seen on the new Mini. http://www.gunsandammomag.com/long_guns/mini_111606/

They have also rounded the corners of the receiver(hope the loss of the edges will keep the brass from being beat to death.

I read the atricle and correct me if I'm wrong but this seems to be the major item making the new mini-14 more accurate?

Why couldn't some one make an aftermarket item to slide over the front sight and clamp down?

We should be able to make our own barrel weights shouldn't be too complicated or use a Sims Barrel De- Resonator to improve accuracy.

I just bought a tractor gun a week ago, an older SS Mini-14 with wood stock and forend. Last night I emptied the barrel which has been soaking for a week in Shooters Choice. This is my normal practice on a used gun, one week with SC copper disolver. When I started, this baby was like a disel truck with 500K miles and no oil change, carbon city and a 22 bore brush would not fit in the bore, awful, just awful. I guess this is typical Mini 14 Stainless gun stuff around here, shhot and never clean. When it stops shooting sell it. The gun has a 2.5 Bushnell Banner scope on it, which appears to be servicable. Now we will try it out over the weekend. I have about $400 in it so we will see. Oh, I did stick a big Mason flash supressor/muzzle break on it and extended the stock with a "recoil" pad.

Best,

Ed

I picked up a used Ranch rifle and with the Federal 5.56 ammo it wouldnt hit anything.  It throws brass 28 feet to the side, so I dont even look for it.  The 55gr boattail bullets wouldnt group 10" at 50 yards.  My gunsmith told me that he was curing those 580 barrels by cutting them off behind the front sight as the sight band was forced on and it squeezed the barrel down there.  Sounded a bit weird to me so using a bit of basic math, I decided to lengthen the bullet and see what it would do.  I went to some of that imported cheap junk with the 65gr bullets and it drives tacks with them.  The twist was just too fast for the short 55's, so you all might try that before you give up.

I dont give a rip if it does one hole groups at 500 yards, all I want it to do is put one hole in a varmit at 100.  Right now it is doing fine with one minute of prairie dog at 100 using a decent 3x9 Bushnell scope.  When I go into the breaks or mesas, I yank that scope off and use the factory sights.  They are good enough for prairie dogs at 100 consistently, and they are sure good enough for coyotes or cats at 50.  We have pigs here and it will sure put a whup on a pig out to 50 to 75 yards too.  I suggest playing with your bullet weight/length before getting totally pissed.

The thing that really sets a mini14 off is a good silencer.  I am a firm believer in them.  Unfortunately, our wacko government makes it difficult to have one, but they are completely legal if you jump through the hoops.  It cuts the muzzle blast, and reduces what little recoil there is and contributes to amazing accuracy.  Now to find another $200 for the next can.
