I got my idea from the Backwoodsman magazine, but I don't need mine to be portable. So I told what I had in scraps and no being pile and built my shooter bench. Later today of tomorrow I will paint it and when it dries, I will move it over to my 100 Yard range.

Just take I 70 East until you see the Barnesville/Woodfield exit. If you see the sign that says Morristown you have gone too far.

Currently I am wonderfing if I should paint this barn paint or just use Thompsons Water seal on it. It will be out in the weather year round, maybe under a shelter if I get some help and some more lumber.

Any suggestions?

Well its a little to late but I would of made it out of Pressure Treated lumber (wolmanized). I wouldn't paint it I would use Thompsons or Olympic sealer on it.

Will it be sitting on concrete, stone or dirt (mud) ? On any of these except concrete I would not have it touch the ground directly. Since its made of pine it will rot fairly quick.

Also dont forget to seal the bottom of the legs  I may have to take you up on the shooting range, my wifes realitives live in Cleveland OH. I may have to make a detour

Slingshot,

I was planning on having it set on bricks. I have different sealers, including varnishes that I can use.

Maybe the next one will be made with pressure treated wood, but I want to see if this design would work for me. So I used the  scrap from other projects to build this one.

I also have the weekly coyote shoot, we just need some spoiled meat. I am up to 23 coyotes as of today.

Sling,

For coyotes, I use a Marlin 1895 in 45-70 or a Rem 700 in 300 RUM.

I was thinking of nailing some treated lumber to the feet of the bench so those will be the places that touch the ground. Sort of little shoes or feet,

BTW I am not married, so I get to pretty much what I want to do and I am retired.

Today, I put on the treated lumber on the ends of the legs. Then Painted it with barn paint.

I may give it a finish coat of Green or Camo or just make it black.

Not Bad work. Yea the pressure treated lumber will help with keeping the pine off the ground. Give it a Camo look with some green and tan paint

Nice looking bench! Where do you sit and what do you sit on? Will that cross piece interfere?

Looks like some GOOD groups are coming up!

The cross member on the left side is a pieces of 2 x 6 treated lumber in the picture it is wrapped with paper while I am painting this bench, the seat is at 16 inches above the ground, the main stage of the bench is at 36 inches. So as it is at the moment is can be useful shooting from it, but may be a little hard to sit for a couple of hours.

This is an ambidextrous shooting bench, with the center section being available for a spotting scope, extra ammo and a score book. I may put a shelf under the stage for more storage for longer shooting sessions.

I am thinking about painting this woodland cammo, like the old BDUs were. Just need from tan, brown and green paint.

After I get done building the foundry building, my new deck, I will entertain building a shelter around this bench.

When it is all done, I will post pictures of the backstop, my target carrier and the shooting bench.

Nice looking bench. Wouldn't survive around here, though. Pine or WW on soil would guarantee subterranean termites would find and feed on it.

Charley,

I have the parts that touch the ground being made out of treated wood. I may dig a footer and put in a concrete base if I want to put up a nice shelter for shooting from. I have "roadways" in and out of my fields, because I have trucks hauling stuff in and out for me. I had a company bring in 10 tons of gravel to put my 24 x 30 tractor shed up on. The truck driver wanted me to walk in front of him just to make sure there were no ground hog holes or other hazards in the way.

From past expereince, I do know that termites eat everything that is man made, even things that I thought would plug them up, they just eat it all. I may even build this as a stilt building and have it up off the ground and have concrete holding the building up. Just a thought.

I have been down your way, you guys have some of the biggest roaches I have ever seen and they told me that Corpus Christi was worse.

Take care,

Jerry

I flipped the bench on it's side and painted all of the underneath again. TI saw a few places I had missed, so they got barn paint on them.

Plus Early this morning I went out and put another coat of paint on the top. Then waited about 4 hours and gave the top another coat.

So far I noticed that with the seat, I think a foam cushion is really the only thing it needs for the seat.

Now it is off to the hardware store to get some paint for doing the cammo thing.

I have the cammo colours in spray paint, it amazes me that I can buy paint like this. I can even get the John Deere colours.

Tomorrow I will get the bench out where I want it placed, then put pavers underneath the feet, then look at doing the cammo thing to it. After it dries, I will get a rifle out and have a lady friend take pictures of me using the bench.

This has been a good experience for me.

I have the Bench out where I want it to be at 100 yards away from the backstop. It is currently up on concrete blocks to leavel it out. Maybe today I will start using the cammo paint on it.

I will keep you posted. If this is dry to tomorrow, we will take picture of me shooting from it.

Jerry
