I am working up a redused load for my Steyer 95 in 8X56R. I have settled on 20 grains of 4198 under a 100 grain Lebel Revolver bullet. This load shoots good but if the powder is not back against the primer in may fail to ignite.
So I am thinking I will just go down to the hobby store and get some Kapok filler. Well that stuff is costly. Instead I bought some cotton batting/pillow filler.
I dump the powder charge in the case and reach into the large bag of cotton, grab a hand full and stuff it into the charged case with a small flat tip screw driver. Then seat a bullet.
As simple as this sounds, stuffing all that cotton into the case can become tedious. Anyone got suggestions or criticisms?

72.. I don't think cotton is the ideal filler for use in reduced charges. Heard some bad reports of ringed chambers years ago.
You might try some dacron pillow filler instead. about 1 grain, or so, by weight. The thing to remember is--don't tamp it into the case .... Some folks use a 1/4 sheet of toilet paper, pushed into the case with a pencil. Don't wad the TP before inserting. the tp method requires more care in handling, but both methods have worked for me.
Hope this helps.

I have already loaded 65 rounds this way. I took the first one I loaded out in the back yard and shot a block of wood to see if there were any signs of bad things happening and there weren't.
The reason for all this is the bullets I have must be kept below 1200 fps. The admonition to keep them below 1200 is not just idle talk. I loaded some that were going about 1800 and they all key holed and shot a group more than 2 feet in diameter.

| Most fibers you find as stuffing or filling are dacron. I've used some fillers onl ight cast loads in the past, but as 3006user notes, the stories about rung chambers are kind of bothersome to me. I've switched to powders that are either postion insensative, or tried to find load combinations that don't need filler.
