Hi I have a Remington 700 ADL with an ISS system (I think that's what it's called), and now I've lost my key to the "J" slot mechanism. Since it's weekend I won't be able to get a new key right away. Does anyone know if I can avoid this lock by using a small screwdriver or something??? Or is the system fool proof and a key is the only way to unlock the ISS?

i remove all my j-locks. i don't know if it will help you now, but its worth a try, anyway. remove the bolt, and hook the sere to your boot lace and pull really hard (you need to overcome the firing pin tension - about 18 pounds), put a dime in the slot on the firing pin when it gets visible, and unscrew the shroud. from here, you should be able to see if you can defeat the j-lock.

like i said, i never tried it myself, but i always remove the j-locks, anyway.

since you'll have it taken apart, might as well just hunt down a gre-tan or callahan assembly and replace the works anyway. last one i did was on an lvsf and i went w/ a kodiak shroud and a tubb firing pin assembly. the lightweight assembly shaved about 4 oz. off the rifle's weight.

if you want more j-keys, give me a holler and i'll mail some off to you - i'm sure i have a few around here somewhere.

Thank you very much for your kind offer, Dakotasin, really appreciate it. I got two keys for free at my local gun store .
