My brother bought a Mauser that has been sporterized. He wants to get a mount for a scope but we don't know what kind of Mauser he has. It has a crown on the reciever with the following lettering below it "FABRI ADE  ARMS" then below that is"OVIEDO". Some letters are hard to read. Can any one help me out? Thanks

Dave

It's not what you choose it's what you settle for.

It's Spanish. Now you have to figure out which model you have. Try googling such things as "Spanish Mauser Oviedo" and see what you come up.

dont get one of the no gunsmith mounts, have it drilled for a proper mount.if it is drilled you may have to call some of the mount mfg's with spacing dims.

Thanks to all. What about those mounts that use the rear sight bracket, like if you was going to use a long eye relief scout scope? Dave

Oviedo was the Spanish arsenal where the rifle was manufactured. It should be a varient  of the 1893 Mauser, and if unaltered should be in 7x57. If it is one of the 1916s that Spain converted to 7.62x51, don't believe the BS from the importer that "it is chambered for the .308 Winchester". Difference in pressure levels, and even the 7.62x51 is pushing the limits on a small ring action, IMO.

Leopold Mauser mounts fit both large and small ring Mausers, I've used the same mount on both rifles. If the rifle is sporterized already, bending the bolt is not that expensive., and a reciever mounted scope is, IME, eaiser to use than a rear sight mounted LER scope.
