What do you guys recommened for cleaning the bore and the receiver on a Remington 7400 autoloader?

What do you guys think of the bore snake?

I've been told that the 7400 can be a problem if the receiver isn't cleaned properly.  They suggested I take it to a gun smith and have it completely striped and barrel removed and cleaned.  I was hoping you guys would have some suggestions of a cleaner I could use rather then going to a gun smith.

Hey Bill,

I have a old Rem 742 Autoloader in 30/06 that was my dad's. Still in good shape I shoot it at least once a year. Anyhow, I take a tooth brush and scrub the insides with Hoppe's 9 then I blast it with Gun Scrubber. Make sure you take a rag to the wood, though it really doesn't damage it I don't want to take the chance. I always clean it upside down with the barrel pointing downward in a gun vise.

Oh yea just remembered, Take the forearm off also and clean out the tubes and such. The gas vents into the forearm and it occasionally gets crudded up.

Hope this helps,
Slingshot

Thanks Slingshot.  That's kind of what I had in mind.  Didn't cross my mind to take the forearm off and clean.  Good idea.

Bill, The chamber can be very finicky.  Remington makes an off set chamber brush with a "dogleg" in the handle. They come new with every rifle. Use it religiously with some gun scrubber or some day you'll be out in the woods with a stuck, empty case, missing a hunk of the rim that was pulled off by the extracter. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt. RD

My dad had that problem years ago with his Remington Woodsmaster in 30.06.  He said he had to use an old military metal cleaning rod to drive a stuck spent shell out of the chamber.  You'd think they'd fixed that problem by now.  Thanks for the tip on the cleaning brush Rockydog.  I'll start looking for one.

In my experiences, auto loaders are far and few between that do not need to be cleaned thoroughly on a regular basis, otherwise this is the problem you will encounter.. My brother had an old Winchester auto .22 that had a stuck case, the bolt came back and tried to feed another round. The loading round hit the stuck chambered case and went off in the open action. Lets just say he was a bit more than startled. I don't own any auto loading rifles now, but my pistols are all stripped and cleaned religiously after a day at the range. You need to do that to your rifles as well. I believe you can probably contact Remington and obtain an owners manual for that rifle, and it should provide some guidance on how to disassemble it to clean it properly.

Already downloaded it from Remington web site.  I ordered a Remington cleaning kit that comes with the angled brushes.  It also has attachments for most calibers.  So I should be set for keeping it clean and shooting.

Thanks everybody.

I like that Outers foaming bore cleaner in the aerosol can. I just stick the tube in the barrel and fill it up with foam. Let it set for 4 or 5 hours and wipe dry and repeat until I think it is clean enough.

I picked up a can of Gun Scrubber.  I looked at that foaming gun cleaner but when I went back to buy it they didn't have any.
