I am looking for an inbetween caliber I have a 223, 243 and a 30.06.   I want to get something for deer between the 243 and .06 that my wife can shoot as well the 06. scares her and she wont shoot straight. 243 she shoots well.  My wish is a 257 roberts but that aint happening... so  im thinking 7mm08 or 25.06.  So here is what I want... your opinion on a caliber in that range that a 4' 9" woman can handle and why you would pick that caliber.

Kev

PS this is the best excuse for buying another gun so help me out:wink:

Well there's nothing wrong with the 243 for anything you'll find to hunt in Ideehoe.

But as this is a new gun excuse thread.....

the 260 remington,6.5 swede, or the 7mm08  should work nicely. Especially in one of the youth gun models that will be a better fit for her physical stature.

+3 on the 260 Rem.

The parent case is the .308, the same as the .243 and the 7mm/08.

or if u wanted to do a larger caliber but still keep recoil to a minimum why not try the .338-08 wildcat. it will make a good short range thumper with bigger holes without all the magnum recoil

you CANNOT go wrong with smething in 6.5; i would like a 6.5/06, but something a little more "legitimate" such as the 6.5x55 might be a more practical choice.

also, in terms of "shootability," the 7x57 is pretty dang good, too!

I have a Model Seven in 7mm-08 that is a sweet little shooter. I also use .257 Roberts. Either would be excellent for a lady or a new hunter.

Kev, Take a look at the Remington Managed Recoil Ammo. It's meant for wives and kids. Makes an .06 feel like a 30-30. There are loads in several calibers see below for details. I'd choose the 270 using the managed recoil.  RD

I agree that the Model 7 in 260 is probably the most attractive of the suggestions.

The 7mm suggestion is a good one though. The factory loads for it are very mild but if you want to handload for it you can soup it up.

Get a Ruger No. 1 in 7mm. How sweet would that be?

new rifles B) in a 700 remington?
i'm a fan :) the 700is indeed a decent action that can be made even better , the howa 1500 is also very similar( and usually a lil cheaper -at least it used to be ... ) they also make the weatherby vanguard btw ,.243 is excellent but that new rifle calls ...the 308 case in any of it's forms should be more than sufficient accurate as heck in 308 not too snabby in 243 either ( i did like seeing the 6.5x55 mentioned as it is indeed a nice( and accurate round with low recoil ..doubt if u would find that in a 700 tho unless custom )the 7-08 also rocks as does the 260 remington..if deer is all ur after i personally prefer something that doesnt cause too much bloodshot damage (i do after all want to eat it ) some of that is negotiable by choosing the correct bullet and passing up point blank shots ...the correct shot placement goes without saying ( tho i miss the days when the .222 was legal @least in my state-talk about low recoil :P )i have a 308 - i never take it deer hunting tho (it's a howa heavy barrel-varmits only -read that p-dogs )i'd also rule out long actions ( saving weight-ur wife will thank u ! ) gotta go with the almost unanimous consensus the 260 , they are quite accurate fairly low recoil and the bullets have great ballistic's,no matter what u do get if u end up reloading one thing to remember is usually a heavier bullet equals heavier recoil , the remington ammo then would be a boon if u dont reload ,for such a short gurl i would consider any action in a youth size as well as having the stock or another tailored for her (i've helped lots of kids and women learn to shoot and a rifle that fits their frame helps alot in the recoil part )g'luck and hey let us know what ya get her ,if the others aint i freely admit my curiosity !
