My 1st custom,

Is a 35 Whelen built on a miltary 98 mauser.  I bought a barrel and stock kit from midway fr I think 168.00 , A Bold trigger from boyds, a tail piece from I cant remember who, And hinged floor   plate from numrich, did a little of the wok my self, and had my smith put the thing together. In short itcost about 800.00. If I would have a chance to do it again I would have gone with a tmny trigger, flag style safty and probably used the fixed floor plate, saving probably 150.00.  I puta VX2 2X7 on it and itshoots real well. if you wanted to have a ustom built onthecheap this isnot a bd way to go !   ..tj3006

I like the whelen alot !

I have taken no game with it but its fun to shoot ! I used the 250 grain Speer hot core last year and I can get about 2640 with RL-15. This year I might go with a 225 grain Partition, beacuse noslers factory load gets 2750, and I think I can match it with the RL-15. Its alot flatter shooting than you might think if you use a spitzer type bullet.

If a guy wanted to he could use a 180 or 200 grain bullet and shoot deer at prety darn long range. I think with the 225 grain load it is a lagitimate 350 yard Elk thumper. I have a model 70 classic sporter 30,06 that just screams at me to turn it into another whelen. I have 2 .308s and if I can make a good trade for another 06, i like That model 70 would just need to be rebarreld and the beat up stock refinished

and it would be a beautifull mate to the mauser...tj3006
