For those that have seen me post for a while, you know my tastes run to stranger stuff. Well, I'm finally cleaning up and plan to shoot a Mannlicher M1888 in 8x50R. Bought it some years back from Century, it was an ex Chilean rifle. Condition isn't great, but not bad considering... bore is fair to good. I'll post some pictures later on.

Charley, Is brass readily available or do you have to reform from something else? Is the bore .318 or .323?  RD

Is there an S or a J stamped on the barrel, that will denote the diameter of the bore. I owned a few 1888 Commission rifles over the years

No, not an 1888 Commision rifle, an Austria-Hungarian 1888 Mannlicher, 8x50R. Straight pull, the predecessor to the 1895 Mannlicher. The 1888 uses a block that drops down from the bolt to lock it, and cams up when the bolt handle is pulled back. I recall seeing an article saying that Von Mannlicher "borrowed" the lock from Ballard. Can't find the article now, will see if it turns up.

Bore is .323 or thereabouts. Hope to be able to make brass from Privi 8x56R, but if not Buffalo has brass. CH4D has dies, and they aren't too expensive.

Have an 1888/14 Commision rifle in 8x57S, AH didn't have smokeless powder yet, their 1888 was originally for a  BP cartridge. I'm figuring  about.32/40 or .38/55 ballistics at best.

Way to go Charlie. I like your taste in guns. I like the wierd stuff, too: 43 Spanish, 11.3x50R Beaumont, 9 mm Bayard 450/400 3" Nitro Express.

Question Charley, isn't the Lebel 8mm X 50mm? Could they be the same?

72Coupe,

The George C. Nonte, Jr. book "The Home Guide to Cartridge Conversion" says they are not the same, but the specs show that they are close.

No, the 8x50 Lebel and the 8x50 from AH aren't the same. That fat old Lebel case wouldn't come close to fitting in the clips OR chamber!

Did your rifle come with those boots??

I only report what I read, I have seen a Lebel type of rifle in a few years, maybe decades and haven't seen much older surplus in my area.

Thanks for pointing that out,

Jerry

Yeah, them damned boots always seem to follow my stuff, can't figure it out!

Metric designations aren't always clear, there can be different cartridges with the same nominal bullet diameter, same case length, but totally different. An example would be the 8x56 Kropatschek (there is also an 8x60 version, just to add to the confusion!) and the 8x56 Hungarian.

BTW, the Kropatschek is my next project...

Yep, some folks get confused on  the metric designations.  My reloading buddy ordered the Lee 8X56 Hungarian die set - it came with an 8X57 die in it!  I figured they thought - "Heck, it's only a millimeter off!  Close enough...."
