I'm currently waiting for what will be my first  custom rifle. It will be a 338-06. MRC action and a Lilja tube. I dropped the parts off late last summer. The action will be cleaned up which the MRC's need in IMO and the rear tang will be re-shaped to something along the lines of a Model 70. I'm having iron sites and a front barrel band installed also. Not sure what I'll use for glass either a Leupold 2.5-8 or a Kahles of simliar magnification is what I've narrowed it down to. I will use detachable mounts, not sure which ones yet. I dropped the pictured English blank off but might upgrade depending on how much cash I have on hand when he's done with the metal work and ready to start on the wood. I like the blank and the lay out is good but I can't resist the temptation to upgrade a little bit. I'm curious as to the progress but also told the smith to take as long as he needs. Not to mention I figure I'm about half to two thirds of the way to saving the money needed and could use a little more time to save the remainder and maybe enough to get a fancier chunk of wood.

Timber, I'm not real sure but more than it should have been. I bought the action and had it barreled and blued with the intention of stocking it myself. That was about nine hundred, the blank was two fifty. I finally accepted my hands just weren't up to the chore and I took it all in to have done professionally. I figure the addtional metal work and another blueing plus wood work and optics is going to run around three to four thousand. I didn't discuss the price too much, just told him what I wanted. I've had him do stuff before so I had a idea what I was looking at. It probably wasn't the brightest idea seeing I'm now laid up and not making as much money, but what the hell. I decided to just sell off a number of rifles to pay the bulk of the bill and I have no regrets.

My 338-06 Ack. Imp.  is built on a SS LH Model 700 action and barreled by Pac-Nor with their SS Match Grade Barrel. I stocked it in a HS Precision Stock. This rifle after i formed 60 cases, groups around 1/2 inch with the 210 gr  Swift Scirocco and Rel 15. . Very flat shooting with this load and lots of power when it arrives on target. The standard 338-06 works best with IMR 4320, Rel 15 or IMR 4064 .The 210 Nosler Part. or Swift 210 gr Scirocco is best for big game and for deer the 200 gr Nosler BT is hard to beat.

I bet you are gonna have a real noce rifle there ! The .338 06 is a good practicle round , I could see my self building one on my pre 64 featherweight action. My 25 06 project is going to go alot like your 338,06 exept I hope it won't cost that much.

My smith will buy chamber fit and turn the barrel and blue for 460.00. I told him no hurry too, cause I am not sure what i will do for a stock.  That 2.5X8 Leupold is an excelent scope for yor project, I have two one on a .270 and one on a .257 Roberts , would like to get another for my .338 win...t3006

bea175, nice rig :) It's crossed my mind to have him punch it out to the improved version. Do you have any idea what you've gained? CUrious as if it's worth having to fireform brass.

TJ, there is a guy on ebay that goes by the handle dakotacliff that appearently has a duplicator. I've seen some very nice stocks for good prices for mausers that he's turned. If I had a current mauser project I'd buy one from him myself.

On the average you gain about 100 to 150 ft per second whick gives you the same vel as the 338 Win Mag in a lighter rifle. The biggest advanage is you can start with the max load for the standard 338-06 and work your way up with almost no case stretch. There isn't that much difference in the standard and the Ack. I'm just a Ack Imp lover and like being different.
