My dad and I came up with an idea for new plinking targets. Although we havent made them yet, I wanted to share the idea with the forum. He get used bowling pins from a nearby bowling alley. Surprisingly, they hold up real well to pretty much anything we have rifle wise beyond 50 yards. Anyhow, we are going to get steel plates and attach old coil springs to the plates, and then the springs to the pins. It should keep me from having to walk back and forth to reset the pins.

You'll find out, when you anchor the pins down, they come apart faster. I would try a few before you do too many.

I just hang a veggie can from a tree branch. Have to change the can every now and then, but it works well for 22s. Might have to use a chain for bigger things -- (I don't exactly "plink" with center fire."
Check with your local water board, they might have some used manhole covers. You can hang them with chains from a trestle or A frame of some kind. Used one when I was in VA, worked well; you can hear and see them wiggle at 100 meters and more. Just don't get too close, ricochets are probable. We got around that somewhat by hanging the cover with a slight forward cant.

heheheh......... i've had a steel bowling pin target hangin on an old realty sign frame in my back yard for years..... it's thick enough to hold up to .357 magnum lead loads but it works good for shooting a rws air rifle in my back yard too.......... a couple of years ago i had a friend cut one of the longer empty propane torch tanks about the same size as a bean can i screwed a hook into the hole in the top and hung it on the same old sign frame beside the steel pin......... both of them get shot a lot in the summer with the rws mod 34..... i painted them both black and sometimes put one of the burhwood casey's orange stick on targets for more precise aiming......... yep it's a great idea....... make em.... they are a ball to shoot at!!

I just wait for G Hogs to come out, they make great live fire practice targets.
Almost any caliber works on them.

The bright red clay targets work real well on the 110 yard berm - we collect them after the monthly Hunter Safety Course - they always have a lot go into the high grass and don't break. Excellent for .22 rifles!
Those white wedding cookies on the berm are good too - small enough to be a challenge, and 'bio-degradble'! The birds can eat them.
White aspirins taped onto a black posterboard are superb for .22 training - a real challenge at 25 to 50 yards! I had my butt waxed by a 12 year old kid the first time I tried it - 'course he had been shooting competitively for a couple years already!
My real favorite is golf balls! Start at 15 yards with the .22 pistol, then when they get too far out, use the .22 rifles. They hold up pretty good. BUT - a .223 or 7.62X39 will obliterate them!
Potatoes on the berm are good for the .223 and 7.62X39 rifles - very 'reactive' when hit!

Here's somthing me and my grandson threw together one weekend. Made it mostly out of scrap lumber.
Here's the finished product before we abused it with 22's.

Seems to be enjoying himself.

After he blasted away at it.

A closeup, I made the grooves by sawing back and forth.

I think judging by his grin my grandson enjoyed it.

No no no.....
That's a Henry Mini Bolt with iron sites. He's probably shooting somewhere around 25 yards. Those little candy waffers dissappear when I looked at them. We backed the shooting bench off to about 50 yards as the day went on. He had a lot better luck hitting at 50 yards than I did. But to be honest he did about 95% of the shooting. It was all about making sure he had a good time.

That feller there is my main man. He's the one who does my depriming for me. Team player. His mother is my daughter and she was raised around guns and shooting. His dad is a cop and loves to shoot. So I haven't had to deal with wacko relatives who fear the evil guns.
Weather permitting we shoot just about every time he comes out. I've held him back off the 10/22. Once he shoots one of those then Katy bar the door. There will never be any loose 22lr laying around. He has shown interest in centerfire rifles. His dad had him shooting an AR. He likes his little 410 I got him. He'll be okay.
His little sister likes to shoot also. Just she hasn't figured out the whole aiming thing.

Those little things are extremely accurate. After the grandkids all out grow it I'm thinking it will become a truck gun.
I was out looking for milsurps last September ish. Grandson was with me. He noticed it then but didn't say anything. About two months later we were driving through town and he said " Hey Grampy can we go by that store again?" So I said sure. As we were pulling in he told me there's something here I want you to look at. Well you know the rest of the story.

Bowling pins are excellent pistol targets and there used to be matches geared towards shooting them. The idea was to set them up on a table top and shoot til they hit the ground. Even a well placed .45 slug isn't always sufficent to clear the table.
One of my favorite plinking targets is the Ritz or Hi Ho crackers. You know the round ones? They are great 2 1/2" targets that explode when hit plus once you are done shooting for the day...the squirrels and birds have something left to eat on.
