I would rebarrel it with a 26 inch pipe, open the bolt face and give it life anew as a 300 Winchester Magnum..I own three 30-06`s..But I like my 300 Win better than all of em....

I'd opt for a 6mm 06, but hey that's just me!

Why not just stick with the good ol 06? Isn't much of anything that cartridge won't do in the real world.
Plus it is the cartridge that they always try to compare, with the new kid on the block.

OK SPECS:
REMINGTON 700
anything between 6.5mm up to .338"
reasonable velocity/energy figures out to say 500yds
minimal gunsmithing work

There are many calibers you can try, I like the 30-338 for long range shooting, the 35 Whelen for larger North American Game and the 300 Win Mag also for large game.
or you can get a 6mm Remington barrel, great deer caliber for longer ranges, and you have a slightly larger case capacity than 243.

Why not 30-06 Ackley Improved, if you want more velocity/energy?. The 30-06 is pretty accurate out to 500 yds, at least it used to be with a Garand. I would think that with a Rem 700, it would do better job.

umm re-chambered isnt re-barreled that is limiting ..30-06 AI, i suppose one could get the rifling redone tho i wouldnt go too big if a sporter barrel (8mm,338,35 cal perhaps? )i'm with crazy except i'd prolly take a 6.5-06 and that would require re-barreling ,since it is a long action i'd want to use the length ,deer dont really need all that.targets ya dont really need a heavy kicker ,there are so many wildcats out there ....the ackley improved (AI)offers a lil more punch plus one can still fire factory ammo ,i'm with u on the dont care for the 06 part, beautiful designed round and fairly versatile and adequately accurate... but i just have no need of it, in a light rifle it kicks pretty good and IMO is too heavy for light game and if i'm going after the big stuff well...i'd much rather have something bigger but i also have to confess that i have dies and brass for it and have reloaded it alot the real question would be "what are ya gonna shot with it ? " btw ? i love the mini 30-06 ! (.222 remington)but what a waste of a long action [sigh]

I did some research on the 30-06, 30-06AI and 6.5-06.
Since you want to use it for light skinned game, any of those work great.
Your Rem 700 probably has 1 in 12" twist barrel so should handle light bullets pretty good.
I would try bullets in the 130-150 range first.
Looked up 30-06AI at reloadbench.com and this what they say.
30-06 Ackley Improved Reloading Data Bullet (grs.) Powder / (grs.) MV ME Source 130 SP IMR4895 / 54.0 3150 2860 P.O. Ackley 150 SP IMR4350 / 59.0 3070 3150 P.O. Ackley 165 SP IMR4350 / 58.0 2940 3180 P.O. Ackley 180 SP IMR4350 / 56.0 2825 3200 P.O. Ackley 200 SP H4831 / 59.0 2760 3180 P.O. Ackley 200 SP IMR4350 / 54.0 2675 3190 P.O. Ackley 220 SP IMR4350 / 54.0 2620 3365 P.O. Ackley
That is slower than what Hornady says for 130 gr in 30-06 with 3200 fps with Varget 55.8 gr or IMR 4064, 55.9 gr.
The 6.5-06, according to Hornady is slower than the 30-06 with 129 gr bullet.
Probably the biggest advantage of the 6.5 is the better bullet coefficency than the 30 cal, which would be better at longer ranges.
Unless I would be doing a lot of long range shooting, I would stay with 30-06, go to lighter bullets and spend the money to get the barreled action trued and a good crown put on it. For long range shooting, I would go with 6.5-06. 6.5/284 would be another good choice but supposedly it is a barrel burner, no personal experience with it.
Another great choice would be .270. Flat shooting with less recoil than 30-06. I have two 270's, one in a Sako and a Ruger #1. 270 works great on mule deer with 130 gr handloads.
Inherited a 30-06 in Rem 721 and after recrowning, great shooter with 165 gr bullets. Haven't tried lighter bullets in it.
Hornady used a 1 in 10" twist with 24" barrel in 30-06, so probably velocities in 1 in 12" might be different. If you can, chronograph.

I agree with DesertMarine...Plus I dislike Belted casings for reloading.
