I have a new vanguard, in 257 Weatherby wood stock, on the way, too good of a deal to pass up.
I'm thinking 110gr accubonds to start. My second choice would be 100gr or 115gr partitions. I see Barnes recommended alot for this round, comments?
For powder I was thinking (1st)R-22, (2d)IMR7828, R-25 or H1000.
I've seen H870 loads recommended, but can't find H870, it's not listed on Hodgdon site anymore, has it been dropped?
Anyone have a better place for a starting load?

It looks like it may want to shoot, I put ten rounds through it, cleaning between shots. Best three shot 100yd group. I think with a little work, it could turn out to be a shooter. Attachment: 257wby2.jpg (Downloaded 34 times) Last edited on Sat Aug 8th, 2009 04:25 AM by RobertMT

I will tell you, I own a lot of Weatherbys and to me, they are the most finicky to reload for. One thing, I have chronoed many a factory load and found them to be consistent with the published data. The reloading manuals almost never publish data that reproduce velocities and energies that come close to the Weatherby/Norma ammunition. Since I have chronoed the factory ammo, I feel comfortable that they are publishing good information. Second problem is the inherent free bore. While more recent produced Wby. rifles have less free bore, as I have learned with discussion with Wby. brass and reading in magazines, most of my rifles are not new. Therefore, when working up loads, my usual tactic of measuring chamber length and backing of the lands and grooves by about 0.02 inches, does not work all of the time. The almost always seem to work best, with SAAMI specs, or in other words, to the length of the factory ammo. By using that as a reference, gradually seating the bullet to a lesser depth, you can find the sweet spot. Fortunately, all of my Wby. rifles have been very accurate, far better than most out of the box, so it has not been a real issue. But, when really trying to get down to 0.5 moa, it is tougher than other rifles. Another reason that it is tougher, is that you are usually shooting a super magnum. The 257 on the other hand, is probably one of the flattest shooting, most versatile calibers ever created. Loaded with the right size bullet and the proper powder behind it, it is a blazer that reaches out to touch anything, that will drop all but the biggest of the large game animals. Boddington wrote a nice article a while back about the cartridge. I own two Wby's in the cartridge and only the 240 Wby. is liked more by me than the 257. Based on the price you payed, you got a steal of a deal and based on the targets, it will be a shooter. Remember, when hunting with the 257, old Roy will be standing behind you and talking that bullet into the right place. Good shooting. Last edited on Wed Aug 12th, 2009 02:57 AM by dho3

By the way, the picture in my avatar is a custom Wby. Vanguard in a 257 Wby. Magnum, with a gun metal gray Leupold 4.5x14 Leupold scope. Gorgeous rifle. Still trying to work up the right loads for it.

I'm going to put another ten rounds through it and then I'll start on load development. I found some H1000 and will load 85grBT over 76grs to start, max load is 80grs, I'll stop somewhere around there if no pressure signs. If H1000 doesn't work well, I'll try R-22 or IMR7828 and/or 110 gr accubonds.

Great looking rifle and it looks like a shooter to me! I have a Mark IV in 257 Wby that I have been trying to work up a good load for. I come into some Norma MRP powder a few months ago so I bought a Norma reloading manual from Midway and have started working up several loads for the 110 AB, Speer 120 gr. Hot core, and 100 Nosler gr BT. I am also working with RL25 and the same bullets previously listed.
