Allthough I am not a big Remington 700/721 fan, I found a Rem. 700  in a 7x57mm in a pawn shop. It has a straight slimmed down stock with actual cut checkering (not the stamped crap found on most ADLs & BDLs), hinged floor plate, ebony forearm cap and grip cap. The barrel is not your standard m-700 contour barrel. It is a slim contoured (coach whip) barrel. After holding/caressing it, I fell in love with the way it felt and balanced. I went home and looked in my Blue Book of G- Values and found it is what I believe to be a Rem. 700 Mountain rifle, circa 1990, although it is not marked that on the rifle. Went back to the pawn shop yesterday and did some dickering and walked out the door with it for $500 even. Not a steal but did not get screwed either.

My question is does anyone have any experience with these slimmed down rifles as far as accuracy etc.? I am not concerned about the caliber, it will outshine the the 7mm-08.

Yep.I got one, in 30-06.Great Rifle, great round just don`t use it enough...
I have a custom 7x57mm..It is an absolute dream to shoot and kills deer just as dead as my magnums(more accurate too with 139 grain bullets than both my magnums). It is the one and only rifle that could give me a true shot at breaking below .10 five shot group...It did a .18 group so far as the best but I was in my click on that day..
You`ll love it Blackhat, doesn`t beat ya to death with recoil, kills the deer we have here with authority and handles wild porkers just as well..
congrats, glad to see ya joined the realm of 275 Rigby and "The Spanish Stinger" owners.

I think you got a good deal on a nice rifle in a good caliber, perfect for deer hunting or even larger game. Enjoy it and work up some loads it really likes.

Report on new toy.

Well I could not stand it any longer. I put a 4X Lyman All American scope,I had laying around, on my new toy since the scope I ordered (a VX-II 4-12x40 AO)  a week ago has not arrived yet. Got my hands on some Winchester Super X 145 gr. Powerpoint ammo. I quickly saw the gun was going to be a shooter when I was getting the shots on paper at 100yds. Every adjustment I made on the old 1/2 MOA scope put the bullet at the right location. I shot two 7/8" groups right off the bat WITH FACTORY AMMO! The only quirk is since the barrel isn't floated and it still has the Remington pressure point in the stock, I could only shoot two shots  before letting the barrel cool some before shooting the third shot. The first groups I shot slowly since the barrel is so thin and it would heat up quickly. I tried to shoot three fast but it would scatter the last shot pretty bad. I AM VERY PLEASED!

Does anyone know where I can buy a Lyman All American if a fixed 6X or variable? This scope I have is one of the old ones where the reticle moves in the image. In other words if the scope is not perfectly aligned with the bore, then the reticle will be off center in the image view.

Blackhat, I had an old scope like that and it was great on targets or on the first shot at standing game. But shooting at moving game was something else. Whether it's peeps or scopes the human eye, at least mine, seems to want to center that image in the field of view. Always had to remind myself to slow down and aim more carefully. RD

Picked up one about a month ago and have not taken it out to dance yet. One is way too busy when he cannot "bust some caps". Only problem is that it is in that inferior 308 caliber. Well, one cannot have everything-lol. It has a laminated monte carlo stock with bipod and tactical glass. I expect great results from my honey, wc

B'hat said, "Got my hands on some Winchester Super X 145 gr. Powerpoint ammo. I quickly saw the gun was going to be a shooter when I was getting the shots on paper at 100yds."

I've found that particular brand of 7x57 ammo to be very accurate in my custom Mauser. So much so that I save that ammo for use strictly in that rifle alone. My Winchester m70 Featherweight, also a 7x57 gets the hot handloads as does my Ruger #1A, another 7x57. Can you tell I like the cartridge?

I usually just shoot the Winchester these days as it's light weight doesn't break down my arches like the other two rifle. Also, it shoots just about every bullet imaginable except the Winchester 150 gr. bulk bullet. Come to think of it, none of my 7x57's like that bullet, nor does my .280 Remington. The only rifle I haven't tried them in is my recently acquired Ruger #1 in 7MM Rem. mag. It already shows signs of being a temperamental gun anyway so not much hope there in using that bullet. Way too much variation in weight is what is the problem. i haven't decided whethr to waste some components trying to find a load that works or melt them down to salvage the lead,as they are that bad. Of course, if one finds that 6 to 8" groups are satifactory, then I suppose they're OK. BTW, that's from the Winchester than normally shoots less than one inch with rare exceptions. How much weight variation? Howabout I weighed 100 bullets andit varied plus or minus two full grains from the nominal 150 grains. WTF?

It does sound like you got a Remington Mountain Rifle.  I had one and unfortunately sold it.   It was in a .280 Remington and was a great rifle.  (I need to buy another one again!)   The 7x57 is a great cartridge and I think you will be very happy with it. I know it won't beat you to death at the range, and it's a great round to load for and has real potential.   I have never owned one, but I feel that a 140 gr. Nosler Partition or Accubond would be the perfect bullet in this rifle.  Shoot whichever bullet your rifle likes best!!   Great buy you made!!

Yup sure sounds like a Remmy Mountain and in 7x57 none the less!!! there can't be too many of those around. Stoke it with H-414 and a 140 partition and you should shoot small groups and flatten anything that makes the mistake of giving you a shot.

I have the exact rifle, it is  very accurate and will launch 140 Nosler Partition's  at 2840 fps. out of  a 22 inch barrel. I use 50 grains of H4350 and light it up with a Federal LR primer. This load was safe in my rifle and shouldn't be used in your rifle without working up the load first to see if it's safe. The 7x57 does have more case capacity than the 7-08. The 7x57 is a classic round, the 7-08 is a newcomer but will do the same job as the 7x57. The factory 7-08 is loaded hotter, but the 7x57 really outshines it with reloads.

Blackhat, your description of the Remington M-700 in 7X57 caliber indicates it is one of their limited edition classic series which, among other differences, are identified by a classic style stock. These are offered annually in a different "classic" caliber each year. Their Classic 7X57 was offered in 1981. Hope this helps clear up any confusion and misinformation.

Thanks Offfhand, it does have a classic stock however it is very slimmed down and the barrel contour is what I call a "coach whip" barrel - very light and thin. According to the Blue Book of Gun Values, it is  a "Mountain Rifle" and if their information is correct it was offered in a 7X57 in 1990. The rifle has  the ebony fore end. I am still tinkering with it and have started out with 150 gr. Rem. CoreLoks. It shoots very well but in it's current factory stock set up is only a two shot gun with the third shot being a bad flyer. I will probably have it bedded and floated after deer season. I do like the rifle very well. It balances much better than my Winchester Featherweights do.

For a hunting rifle 2 shots should be enough anyway. I would be tempted to leave it as is.Chances are that the problem is related to the barrel and not the bedding. The first shot from a cold barrel is the important one anyway.

Sounds like you got a mighty fine rifle there. I tried like the dickens to find one of those mtn rifles in 7x57 when they were making them and couldn't get it done.

The Hornady 154 gr interloc is a great bullet for the grand ol dame.

The last elk my wife shot with her 7x57 and that bullet, dropped in his tracks at about 150 yds, she dead center the shoulders and the exit hole was about the size of silver dollar.

That bullet driven at the saammi spec loads also shoot remarkably well to 500 yds.
