Excuse my last reply with the 338-06. I thought I had another site.   I feel a good in between caliber from the .223 and the .308 Winchester would be a 6mm Remington.  It's a great varmint, antelope, and deer cartridge.    It's big brother the .257 Roberts would be equally as good, but I still like the 6mm.

Bea,

I had thought of that one, but I want just a little lest power. I had a rifle that was the Rem 244, which became the 6mm Rem.

It is a good caliber

I'll stick with the .257 Roberts. Light bullets for varmints and one can shoot somewhat heavier bullets for deer. One can go as high as 120 gr. bullets in the .25 caliber rifles, which is a bit of an advantage over the .243/6MM 100 gr. bullets most commonly used. (I have both the .243 and .257 Bob and the .243 stays home while the "Bob" gets to go out and play.)

The biggest problem is finding a rifle in the .257R.

I also have a 6.5 Swede, actually 2 of them. One all original and one sporterized. The are both great shooting guns.

I have heard great things about the 260. Some of the guys at work shoot them and I hope to get with one of them and try one.

But, I also have a 25-06 Marlin XL7 and like that. It is quite accurate....more so that the guy pulling the trigger.

I like the 7.62x39 for close range. I have an SKS, an AK47 and a Ruger mini-30.

But for the question you asked....I like the .243.

STEEL13.....Is the 6.5-08 a factory load or wildcat? Thanks, Guy
6.5-08 is wild cat as far as I know.

6.5-08 is as close to the .260 as is possible.

In that range I have a few that fit; but my choice woould be 260. If you reload??? why else would you be here, the 250 Savage is near perfect.

I have a 260 that I use for coyotes and it have killed 6 deer, all one shot kills. I load the 129gr as an all around bullet. I'm not a hide collector so some damage is OK with me. If I wanted a good hide gun the 25-35 is the way to go, but you can duplicate the 25-30 with reloads down of the 250 Savage. There are still some 250 Savage remington NIB floating around.

This is for ranges from 50 yards to 200 yards, for coyotes to deer.

Any suggestions and ideas would be appreciated.

The 7x57 in a modern rifle like the Remington 700, it's better than the .308 as far as I'm concerned.

Another vote for the 260 rem, if you handload. Wide variaty of bullet weights great SD and BC. Hard to beat it. Doesn't burn much powder and is a pleasure to shoot all day long.
