I am looking for a rifle that is between 223 and 308 in performamce, but not a magnum. Something like a 243, 257 Roberts, 7mm Waters, or what ever.
This is for ranges from 50 yards to 200 yards, for coyotes to deer.
Any suggestions and ideas would be appreciated.

I plan on buy a bolt gun or a lever gun, but the 260 Rem sounds interesting.

My vote goes for a .243 or maybe a 7mm-08. The 7mm-08 has same or better ballistics then the 308 and can be loaded for deer or can be loaded with light bullets for varmints.

Jerry there must be 15 good choices that fits in those parameters, 30 if you count wildcats and Improved rounds.
Ive always been intrigued with a 6.5-08.

Much as I like the 6.5x55, I'd go for the .257 Roberts. It's a very underated cartridge now, but it works just as well, or even better than the day Remington brought it out, way back in the 1930s. Moderate recoil, adequate power, decent accuracy. What more could you ask for?

what about a bore burner like the 223wssm or 243wssm ,
never fired either one ,but they looks real good on the numbers,
and i suspect ole Wylie would never know what hit him

I'm a big 6.5x55 fan but if you already have a 308, well I'd go with the 257 Robert's or 250 Savage if you reload. If you don't, I look at the 25-06. The 260 does sound good but for coyotes I think I'd like the 25's with their light bullet's better. Might even consider the 243 but personally I consider it a preditor rifle that's killed a lot of deer.

I do a huge amount of reloading, so any caliber is not out of my reach, but I want to avoid the new short mags and similar rounds due to shortage of brass. I am having a hard time getting some once fired in a couple of pistol caliber and one rifler caliber, so I will buy new when I find it, the problem is finding it.

Why not get the most popular deer rifle that ever hit the Eastern part of the country.
30-30 lever action. No problem getting that brass. Or get a new single shot break down H&R with 3 or 4 barrels. smacks

as much as a fan as i am of the 6.5's ....a 243 or even a 6mm remington should suffice ,btw ? i dont take my 6.5 swede deer hunting ( it messes'em up plenty bad )the 6 mm's will do duty as both a varmit and a deer rifle and the recoil wont beat ya ta pieces ( my last pipe is a 6.5 x.284 but it's not for deer lolz )and while i love the 7-30 i only use it in a pistol ,anything with a rim isnt as great for a bolt action ,one could always get a 6.5 ariska and have it chambered for the .257 x6.5,except for reloading dies it's a fairly cheap and decent option ,call it the best of both worlds lolz a great caliber and cheap enough brass and forming cases is a snap ( neck up 6mm rem or .257 roberts or neck down 7x57 mauser )

I have two Marlin 336 in 30-30, one is a regular model and the other one is a scout model. Because of age and trifocal vision, I use those for a 100 yard gun. I have a T/C Contender is 30-30 as well.
Lerts put it this way, I want a new toy.

Well if your looking for a lever action take a look at a used Savage 99 in 243 Winchester or 250 or 300 Savage.
Bolt gun I would get a 260 Rem or 25-06 That was my Dad's favorite caliber and took many deer with it. Super accurate at long ranges.

toy ? that sounds like somethin about 58-62" long tops the scales at about 100# max .....and brings me new brass every day with a smile ;) ( and a cup of coffee wouldnt hurt lolz )if u didnt limit urself to bolt or lever u could get an ar receiver and do a 6.8 guess u could do that in a thompson or a bolt action tho,the 260 is a sweet round umm a 450 marlin is a 200 yarder too
umm i'm still stuck on that thought of a toy ....

Kind of looks like the .257 Robt. would be a decent choice. Biggest problem is finding rifle in that cartridge. I think Remington might still be making one or you could go the custom route. I have two rifles chambered to the Robt., a Ruger #1B that is dead nuts accurate and a Winchester M70 Featherweight that is not all that far behind the Ruger for accuracy. Another would be the 250 Savage if you can find one.
I'm not all that fond of the .243 for deer, especially if they're large deer. I used to take kids on their first deer hunts when I lived in Nevada and had access to private ground. I saw 6 deer taken with my .243 which I let the kids use with mixed results.
One was a bang/flop DRT. The others ran over various distances ranging from about 30 yards to one well over 200 yards that was stopped when it ran into a fence. It actually backed up and hit the fence two more times before expiring. Those results did not impress me. The sad part is every one of those der were well hit with a decent bullet and internal damage was usually quite extensive. If that ranch hadn't been relatively open country with ony scattered willow brush, most of those deer might not have been recovered as there was little or no blood trail.
I'll probably take the .257 on an antelope hunt next year for my wife to use and I'll back her up with either my 7x57 Mauser or a .270 Win. She likes the .243 so I figure the "Bob" will work just fine for her and she has agreed to try it. I thnk it will work just a bit better than the .243.

I am astounded that no one touted the 270. Enough snort for a longer range and punch enough for deer all the way out. Definitely not exotic, but well proven, and will spread yotes on the dinner table for the crows to pick over.

Jerry, Did you know that Savage has just reintroduced rifles in .250 Savage(AKA250/3000)and .300 Savage. Light recoil in the .250. Tons of bullets available. Light bullets to 3000 FPS for yotes. Nice heavy .25 bullets available for 200 yd Whitetails (not available in .243). Accutrigger. Factory loads still available. Cases can be made from 22-250. What's not to like? I may have talked myself into one.
You can also go to ERShaw and get a Savage replacement barrel so chambered for a Savage 10. All threaded and ready to headspace.
